Charcoal

Post by paulr »

Does anyone else find it hard to get charcoal???
It's easy to get briquettes but it kinda hard to get cheap charcoal...
A bag of charcoal costs between 32 and 35 dollars which I find expensive..

Does anyone know of a good charcoal supplier (Sydney area); I'm really considering getting a pallet and saving myself some money....

Hi Paul,

First post.

Can't really help you but I live in Adelaide...there's a place on Port Rd at Hindmarsh called Gaganis Bros and they sell all sorts of stuff including 20kg bags of charcoal for around $20.

I usually find that a bag last me around 6 months.

I do have a question though...I bought a cast iron hibachi a while back and its fantastic. (Especially good for your Saté Daging recipe from Food Safari). The heat it generates is huge...what do people put them on? I currently just sit mine on top of my gas trolley bbq but that's not very convenient. If I put it on something wooden I'm sure it would catch fire as the radiant heat is so intense.

Here's some video of it in action

Hi Dave, consider yourself lucky...I can only get a bag of charcoal for between 30 and 35 dollars (unless I buy 20 in one go...hmm)
In summer a bag will only last me for about 4 weeks (I do a fair amount of BBQ-ing).

Not sure where I would put a hibachi on (I liked your YouTube video by the way), I guess I would build a small brick construction and place it on top of that (I you have the room and can build something semi-permanent?

Regards, Paul

Holy smokes...a bag in 4 weeks!

You are definitely a "BBQ fanatic".

Sounds like a pallet is not such a bad idea.

I read another post here about the recipe you did on Food Safari and whether you can use chicken instead.

I can tell you that we now only ever use chicken in your recipe...my kids think its the best thing I do on the bbq...we've done it many times since I first watched that show.
