sealing an offset smoker
sealing an offset smoker
what thge best stuff to use , to seal around the chimney , there is a big gap around the chimney where it pokes through ?
Re: sealing an offset smoker
HI Kongman, Probably just grab a tube of food grade silicone and use that? If you're stuck for a quick, temporary fix you could try jamming a bit of tinfoil into the gap.

If it was new, I'm suprised there was a gap that would need filling.

Re: sealing an offset smoker
I'd only bother sealing the chimney if it is out in the rain, otherwise the chimney plate inside the cooking chamber holds it to the body nice and tight.
And don't forget the metal will expand and contract as it gets hot.

Some mods are just feeding strawberries to pigs and some will always try and improve things.
How necessary? Dunno, I suspect there is to a degree for some folk.
I pimp and improve BBQ's but I can't honestly say it was worth it other than it kept me occupied for a bit .
however everything can be improved and tuned .

Mine has the same gaps/poor alignment of the firbox door too... I've found that all it does is increase air-flow, so at worst it will run a little hotter than you might expect, but you can allow for this by closing the main vent/chimney more.
I've found that my firebox door has actually warped and seized, so i'm going to get a new one made up by a mate with a better fit.

Re: sealing an offset smoker
As Garth says, it's not a problem for the type of unit that it is. Offsets fun on good airflow, you are not trying to trap the heat and smoke in the cooker, rather you want it to flow through nicely, the heat and smoke quality is a product of the fire you have built, the butterfly vent offers primative air control, but an offset is not meant to run as "Tight" as a Kamado. The slide vent on the chimney is more to keep the rain out than it is to control smoke and heat, I run mine wide open.kongman wrote:urbangriller wrote:I'd only bother sealing the chimney if it is out in the rain, otherwise the chimney plate inside the cooking chamber holds it to the body nice and tight.

You can run a gasket around the door if you want (and if that won't stress the hinges), but I havn't bothered on mine.
