Yeah I think the heatbeads are pretty good quality here in Australia so they are the no 1 choice but as you say about that nuttiness taste can still be enjoyed if it was a 60/40 or even a 70/30 split. 70% heatbeads and 30% lump charcoal. Phil, With Briquettes I do have good overall success managing my temps by using the bottom ( & sometimes top)vents of the Performer although it takes constant monitoring (but that's half the fun of BBQ isn't it). I haven't had much experience with Lump, I do have some I bought from BBQ's Galore ...
