My Filing Cabinet Smoker, AKA The Red Rocket!

Post by taizecody » Sun Aug 21, 2011 5:48 pm

G,day all,
My name is Steve, I am in Newcastle, After visiting the States last year, I have become infected with the bbq bug big time!
Like any tru blue aussie I have always loved throwing a steak on the barbie, But the American's and their ribs and pulled pork!... Man you just can't beat it, and I was keen to try and replicate some of their awesome flavours.
I had success with smoking ribs and other stuff on the hooded bbq, But wanted something more! So after a bit of research on the net, came across some guys using filing cabinets as smokers. So I decided to build my own.
Works pretty well with charcoal but I couldn't keep it hot enough, so I have decided to go with gas and also some charcoal, Any way here some pics so far, would love to see what you guys think.

Cheers Steve

Nice Work Steve!

Welcome to the forum! Showed your pics to Management...just got the "don't even think about it" cold stare!!

You could enter this months comp with that rig (providing it didn't cost more than 50 bucks to make)!

Cheers

Very good point, especially with the bottom draw as it would burn the old paint on the inside of the cabinet & the paints they use in office furniture are usually polyurethane based 2 part epoxy to handle extra wear & tear, and these have isocyanates, ...cyanide?

Hi guys
Regarding the paint, I fired it 2 times before use, So I burnt all the paint off the first draw and the red paint is fire proof paint, The second draw holds a water pan.
I am still alive after eating ha ha, The only problem I had was the plastic runner wheels on the draws melted on the second draw which now means i have to put water in the pan from second top draw.
