First low and slow in Family Q
First low and slow in Family Q
After mostly playing the the pellet grill recently, I looked at the Family Q and she seemed a little lonely.
Mine is a Natural Gas model which burns a bit cooler than LPG, so figured I'd have a try with low and slow. Got some beef ribs from a bulk butcher, foil down on bbq, ribs on roasting rack.
Temp came up to 115C, so in went a pan of water. Temp still rose slowly, so have fashioned a way of very slightly cracking the lid, and temp seems to be holding at 107C. I will be stoked if I've managed to find a way to stabilize at this temp. I'll post up pics later. Fingers crossed this works.

Sorry, I should have clarified I have the single burner on low, have not had to resort to turning the knob almost off.
Temp still holding:

Re: First low and slow in Family Q
On face value, I would have to say the cooler burn of natural gas seems to really help with keeping the temp down. Once I cracked the lid, the temp hardly moved. And this is with the small burner just on low, no turning the knob till it's almost off.
Ribs now out, wrapped in foil and towels sitting in esky:
Of course I'll need to do this again, purely for scientific reasons of course
Now I just need to work out how to smoke at the same time.

Looking good Wazza. I did a coupe of lamb shoulders in the babyq while camping and it went fine. I propped the lid open a tad with a bit of wadded up foil. Could just crush it down to raise the temp a bit
Another thing that could help is to turn it side on to any breeze you have ( or set up a fan?) the wind blowing through via the gaps at the ends should keep it down too.

Take a look at the smoking tube I used in this thread: http://www.aussiebbq.info/forum/viewtop ... =3&t=15792
The pellets burn independently of the heat source, so it does not matter that you're just barely burning your gas.
There's another thread on here somewhere where someone found something almost exactly the same made in Australia.

Small drip/ water tray between the burners. You have to take the grill off to put in it/ take out.
You might find it easier to put a roasting tray will grill and some liquid to moist and baste.
What do you intend to cook low and slow?

Post some photos of the ribs when you decide to bbq.
