Porterhouse 600 gm steak cooked on Baby 'Q'

Post by Mainey . . . »

Requested some 600 gm, inch thick, Porterhouse steaks from my local supermarket

The Weber Baby 'Q' turned this 600 gm Porterhouse into the photo's below

I was very happy with my first purpose bought special (size) steak cooked on my Weber Baby 'Q' :D :D

Oiled on both sides, coated each with copious amount of ground cracked pepper and a small amount of ground salt & timed @ 4 mins on first side, then 3 mins on second side

Was beautiful and moist and just melted in the mouth - best steak I've cooked on any BBQ

I'm just learning, however I can't see it getting much better than this steak
Maybe I will change timing a bit, down to 3 mins both sides next time :)

That's a great looking steak mate. I haven't cooked on my Q in a while. I may have to rectify that!

Mate, that turned out really nice...you outa be proud!!

A lot of people don't understand the advantage of lid down grilling and many gas BBQs are just not designed to do high heat lid down grilling apart from Weber who pretty much invented it.
Why does it work so well? I believe it's because when the lid is down, a fair bit of the heat is being swirled around inside the top of the lid then back onto the meat, this is good because it keeps the flavour around the meat instead of up in the atmosphere and because the heat is also pre-cooking the top side of the steak so you don't have to leave it there for too long after flipping.

It just takes a little to retrain yourself to trust the Weber Q to do what it does best......and it's not like low n slow where the adage is " if you're too busy lookin', you're not bloody cookin'" because it takes too long to regain the temp when the fire is low but with grilling...it's entirely different....won't take long for the heat to get back.....after a while..you won't need to look as much.

Cheers

I've done all three of the same steaks since I have bought the Baby 'Q' now and they have all turned out the same - beautiful and moist and really full of flavor

I've figured I must use the timing method of cooking when using the Baby 'Q ' :)

Only thing now is perfect the timing, the 3 x 3 mins I used yesterday with nothing done to the steak was also good and less clean-up of the grill plate

I put the used grill in a sink of water for a few hours while I'm not using it, then when getting it out I rub it with a brush and it's clean in just minutes.
I then put the grill plate back on the Baby 'Q' and turn on the gas for a few mins so it gets nice & HOT then turn it off at the bottle.

Works a treat

I'm now a Baby 'Q' convert for sure :D

Obviously I'm still learning

This very thick Porterhouse was done @ 4 mins each side with gas turned up to max, and it still come out a bit more 'rare' than I had expected, but it was still a nice steak

Will get a few more and keep eating just so I can then say I've got the Weber system fully worked out

Had some terrific snags on the weekend but forgot to get the photo's

Steaks just like that are the reason I bought both my Q's.

6 years later, I'm still loving it and I haven't really cooked much else either!

I did a beef roast last week and it come out fantastic :)

This week I have a 1.2kg Lamb Roast in the fridge that will go on the weber 'Q' on Thursday

Taste a few different meals and you may be surprised how versatile the Weber 'Q' really is

After having a 'normal' BBQ all my life I changed when I tasted just ONE steak cooked on a Weber 'Q'
Now after cooking the roast last week I'm a complete convert to the Weber way of cooking

Yummo....Porterhouse is one of my favourite cuts....the thicker the better for a Weber BBQ.

Oh man....I gotta now wait for 2 weeks before I can come home and cook one of those .....maybe Japanese Yaki-niku may suffice :)

Keep practicing Mainey...you're making everyone here hungry 8)

Davo,

I never thought I would get so much pleasure from eating a steak or a roast

All I can say is it's the Weber cooking 'system' that makes the difference as I have used a normal bbq for 50 yrs and enjoyed nothing like I'm getting from the 'Q'

And that's why Weber Q's from the baby right up to the family Q are the best selling BBQ in Australia.

It's design, efficiency, simplicity and product backing is what has made Weber one of the best Companies to buy from.

They pretty much revolutionised American and Australian backyards when they introduced the kettle.....then they pretty much re-invented the wheel with the Q making it create food that tastes very close to it's charcoal siblings.

I started out with the baby Q120 back in 06/07 and used it for cooking lunch before going to do arvo shift up in Brissie every day without fail...then I stepped up to the Q220 and that went really well until I got a Masport 6 burner monstrosity that used more Gas than a V8 supercar.....got rid of that thing and bought the Q320.....I've never looked back since....and I'l never go back to a traditional Aussie style gas BBQ....

I've also got a Weber performer kettle and a Weber Smokey Mountain ....I guess you can call me a fanboy

I'm new to the Q.... :(

When cooking steak, rissoles, snags etc., should I leave my Baby Q on high heat, or drop the temperature??

I've been fiddling a bit with the Q....results are ok, but........

The Q's cook very hot.... Ive got the family Q and noticed at the crosspoint of the outer ring and the centre one its extremely hot...
If you just use a 1-turn grill on a baby Q (1 outer ring) I would start directly over the ring and turn the temp down 1 notch... T
he only stuff I cook on full high heat is haloumi... delicious...

Happy BBQ-ing, Paul
