I used to put it in my injection for Briskets, but ran out years ago and just to hard to get here in Mayberry!

In the early 70's they made me eat Vegemite at a Catholic boarding school in Bowral NSW, never again. It was one of a few haunting memories from there.
I use it as tyre black.

I think it would work, as my gravy story will suggest.FirePlay wrote:But seriously, has anyone actually tried spreading Vegemite on a piece of meat?
Me personally, I can't stand the axle-grease in a jar.
Just the smell of it on the same lunch table at work is enough to put me off my food (one guy has vegemite & banana sandwiches).
However, the wife of a mate of mine swears by it for gravy. Apparently a recipe her grandmother passed down to her.
For years I'd always eaten their roasts & "traditional" gravy, and always said she makes the best gravy out of anyone we know, and despite my grandmother's recipe being very similar (no vegemite though, just salt & pepper for seasoning), it was one of those things you just couldn't replicate perfectly.
Then I found out the gravy was made with the pan juices, a bit of chicken stock, cornflour (all normal so far) then the kicker - a good dessert spoon dollop of vegemite.
They thought it was hilarious when they found out how much I hated vegemite, and that she'd secretly been feeding it to me (well disguised in the gravy mind you) for over a decade....

Ha! So I'm not alone in comparing Vegemite to a car lubricant.Mixin wrote:Me personally, I can't stand the axle-grease in a jar.
I think I compared it to licking the bottom of an oil sump...
I bought a little jar a few months ago because I wanted to get over the dislike and use it on meat, but haven't summoned the courage to open it yet.
Re: Someone is paid money to come up with this!
Sure sure, me too! Every jar I get accidentally ends up in the garbage and I hardly ever see it at the supermarketBentley wrote: ran out years ago and just to hard to get here in Mayberry!

Having lots of one characteristic or flavour profile is not necessarily a good thing.Groovy Gorilla wrote:Vegemite is packed full of umami
Jokes aside, I see it as a failure on my part when there is a food that millions enjoy yet I can't. I extend this to scorpions, crickets, rats, etc.

I like it, but I am glad I was not drinking milk when I read a few of these reply's! When I 1st joined this Forum in 2009, someone suggested I try it spread lightly on buttered toast...I was hooked...really do wish I could source it. In Pasadena it was just a drive to the World Market about 5 miles...here, I don't even know where to look!

Sorry GG, but you have to clarify this for me. When you say he smoked it, do you mean he spread some on wacky tobbacky and inhaled it or do you mean he cooks it lownslowGroovy Gorilla wrote:Keeper wrote:Not sure of his technique but he smokes all kinds of weird stuff
