Homemade Mosquito Trap

Post by Grill Pro Australia »

Im not sure if these will work, but I will give it a go.

Have you noticed the Mosquitos are already out! Here is a homemade trap to help keep you and the kiddies from being a blood donor!!!

HOMEMADE MOSQUITO TRAP:
Items needed:
1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
1 2-liter bottle

HOW:
1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes.
4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired.
5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the color black.)

Change the solution every 2 weeks for continuous control.

If anyone has done this, post up if it works or not...

Cheers, Dave

Don't know if it works for Mozzies, I don't have a problem with them, if Management it within a hundred meters they will be busy with her!

But it works for fruit fly....but that's Vegemite (they are attracted to yeast) and amonia (that knocks them).

Dunno but I sure will give it a try.
The buggers up here will carry you away.
I might make one from a 20lt paint drum,, after I do the bottle test.
I back onto rain forrest so it can be a real problem and I will tri anything
If trees screamed when we cut them down, We wouldn't. If they screamed all the time we would.

It sounds like an awesome part of the world you live in.

Let me know if it actually works as you will probably try it before me.

Maybe not Dave, Its very dry atm, So we may have a low count this year. If it rains however!
Last year was low as well. The two years before that were terrible and had to get crop dusters in.

A few years ago my Son and I camped at Myrtle park halfway between Launceston and Scottsdale in Tasmania's North East.
We, like every other camper suffered the attack from European Wasps. I went to the camp shop and bought a 2 litre bottle of FANTA and made an inverted bottle trap.
Using about 25ml of Fanta as the bait I hung the bottle from a limb away from our camp sight. Within 24 hours the bottle was nearly full of wasps. Soon every camper had followed the traps. A spray of insect spray down the funnel dispatched the wasps. Word soon got around and a legion of council staff arrived and sprayed every wasp hole.
