What did you ruin?

Post by Narmnaleg » Sat Oct 25, 2014 8:18 am

This forum is peppered with pictures of amazing cookups. Pretty much wherever you look on Aussiebbq you find great ingredients cooked masterfully.

Well this thread is intended for the stuff that you normally would not publicise: the failures.

This thread is the equivalent of the DVD cut scenes, where the pulled pork dish fell on the floor before being served. The equivalent of the DVD alternative endings, where the brisket dies instead of living happily ever after. The equivalent of the movie that is scrapped because the star storms off the set in a huff and you forget that last pork chop on the BBQ until it turns into charcoal.

I hope that you are willing to contribute no matter your skill level. Success is ALWAYS preceded by failure and we should own up to it, at least every now and then :). After all even Ridley Scott has churned out some crap movies...

I'll make a start...

I made pizza last night and the very first one had me confidently muttering to myself "there's no need for semolina, look how easily it slides on my wooden peel!".
That was until the sauce of my beautiful margherita (note to self, never again use hot tomato sauce!) got through the thin skin and the pizza got stuck. I tried to make an impromptu calzone, but the soft, thin dough was not cooperating and got a hole in it. All I could do to save it was roll it up and hope for the best.

As you can imagine the best is not what got churned out. Now usually I'm not one to worry too much about presentation and admittedly, this "thing" still tasted ok, but the poor presentation ruined it completely. One of those present said that if you looked at it in a certain way it looked like a penis! From that moment forward everyone referred to it as the "penis calzone".

Ladies and gentlemen, my ruined margherita:

Geez Narm, it looks sorta cute all rolled up like that. Coud have entered it in the "Mew To Me " comp! :D

Glad you kicked this topic off. I have quite a few mishaps on the BBQ journey. Will post some up soon.

Cheers, Wayne

Thanks Wayne :D

I'll make sure to document more of my failures from now on as well.

No pics, (un)fortunately, but my first ever brisket was, shall we say, less than inspiring.

Everything was going swimmingly, the smoker was sitting nicely on around 110 C, and meat temperature was slowly climbing towards my target of 90.

Hit the stall, so wrapped in double alfoil, and then headed off to take the son to basketball.

An hour and a bit later, get home to my temp monitor beeping, and a meat temp of 110 :(

Needless to say, it was more than a little dry, and the family aren't exactly keen whenever I suggest doing a brisket again.

My first ever cook of ribs came out like boot leather. Then there's the few times I've accidentally cooked the crap out of some chicken skewers and was like eating chunks of rock.

No pics but my path to cooking beef ribs was an expensive, time consuming, frustrating journey... Of course once you have learnt the failures seem insignificant. 8) I thought i knew better back then and proceeded to humble myself regularly.

Pizza that did not make the cut, even after trying to scrape! I was smart enough to take the toppings off! Nuff said...

Nice hot fire, eh Bentley? Nothing tastes quite as bad as really burnt dough.

I buggered up a cook for the last comp and will have to grab some pics and put up. It looked great but tasted like crap :(

Here we go.... Jamaican Jerked Fish Wings. Sounded like a good idea at the time................ looked terrific on the plate but in real life absolutley inedible. Felt like I'd been poisoned!! Ended up throwing the whole lot out and getting takeaway

Cheers, Wayne

Wayne it looks really inviting! What do you think ruined it? The sauce? Or some bad fish perhaps?

The Jerk sauce I used. Found an authentic jar that looked the goods. Tasted it and seemd ok too. But on the fish Big Thumbs Down :( I just didn't like the taste combination. On the other hand the hot Banana and Pineapple Salsa was terrific! haha

It did present well but I couldn't post it in the Comp as I wouldn't eat it and would hate to see someone else have a stab at it to find it was crap :D
