Tried some tri tip tonight. Reverse seared with some pecan smoke. Not to bad...not as tender as I'd hoped but good all the same.

Those medallions of Tri-tip look pretty tasty....yes it's not what I call a tender cut but it's a tasty cut and yeah reverse sear is the best way to cook any steak IMO because you use the juices of the steak to create it's own crusty flavour...yummo!! Tri-tip is often found near the rump of the cattle so that's why it's lean but tasty...great for grilling, not low and slow.
I take it you bought these from Costco? It's the only place I've found them....although Costco isn't as cheap as it used to be and I often find that the meat Useby date is waaay too close by the time they reach the display, sometimes mostly only a day to go but it's the variety of meat is where they win, usual butchers just don't want to cut meat like is found at Costco.
