Very happy pizza maker

Post by Woody »

Hi
I've not looked on this site for a while, but have just noticed this new topic, and its lack of use.

I built a barrel/pizza oven about 4 years ago and i am so glad i did.
Sure a proper pizza oven is a dome but the barrel oven cooks amazing pizzas.

I bought a DIY kit and got it freighted to my door and then assembled/built it over a few weeks (had to let the concrete cure before moving onto the next step).
The kit came with a DVD and as i'm not a builder i did have to keep watching it over and over again, even for the simplest things.
The temperature gets extremely hot and the insultaion/mass is so good that you can press your hand on the outside and hold it there when the inside is over 800c.
We make pizza every second week and always load up the oven with large joints of meat in camp ovens and let them slow cook over night (after taking the burning coals out- to drop the tempin the oven).
The pizzas are cooked in less than 2 minutes (the temp should notbe 800c though) with a nice thin crisp base.
You find that a lot of "wood fired pizza oven restaurants" do not come up to scratch with your own.
Making the dough the night before and leaving in the fridge is one way to ensure a better pizza.
I would highly recommend people building their own ovens.

Cheers

There is post at the top of the "general" section that tells you how to post a pic!

Good work Woody.
Building a pizza oven is my next project. My current project should finish early next year....
I thought I would start some research and I also noticed the lack of use of this topic. Keep the info coming mate!

Hi, Im in the process of building a pizza oven. Ive built the base and have an area of 900 X 1000 to build it. Did you use clay cast sections or build it from brick ? I want to build out of bricks from scratch but cant find solid clay brick within a 1000km. Any suggestions ? Ive got a heap of house bricks with the 3 big holes in them but dont think they will be good to use.
Thanx guys

Finally, i have done it.
Here should be my first uploaded photo.

It is my oven with the fire blazing and ready for the first pizza:

As the oven retains so much heat, i always cook something after the pizza, here is a round beef roast andbeer butt chicken.
Notice the browning of the chook by the radiant heat from the top of the oven.

Hi Nini8r

The oven is built from clay brick, not cast sections.
A garden centre around my area said they can order them in by the pallet. They are not cheap.
There is a lot of insulationon the oven which is good, the walls are about 30cm and so retain a lot of heat.

This was a kit from a company in WA, i actually bought mine from one of their distributors in Gladstone.

The oven in kit form was about $1100, i think, it was a few years ago so i can't remember exactly.

My wife joked when the first pizza came out it was a $1000 pizza.
But i think it is definately worth the money, but i would, wouldn't i?

On average we'll do pizza every second weekend.
We do about 8 pizza a night, so that works out to be $1.25 each, plus we'll do the slowcooking and roasting after.
