Re: pizza ovens!
I belong to a wood oven forum although I have yet to build on. These guys are brilliant to work with and learn from with plenty of photos to guide you through. Give them a little look.

Re: pizza ovens!
Well it doesn't really fit as a "proper pizza oven" BUT it is an alternative if you already own a kettle

Days are like waves.. some are good, some are bad... but every one is a gift.
Re: pizza ovens!
Family friends booked someone from Tasmania to come and give a private two day cob oven building workshop in November. I'll be participating, but until then, all I can suggest is Googling for "cob oven"

Although it doesn't belong to me, I had the pleasure of cooking a few hundred pizzas on this Italian oven this past weekend.
Cheers!

A mate of mine was around on the weekend. He built his own pizza oven and did it properly. When he saw my Kamado and I told him what it could do, I think he might go down that track. The pizza oven takes about 3 hours to heat up but also, in his own words, a $hit load of wood. After the novelty wears off, it doesn't get much use.
Re: pizza ovens!
That's too long. Sounds like a brick oven? Too much thermal mass takes too long to heat up. A good backyard pizza oven for me would just have castable refractory lining, firebricks on the base and be well insulated. It would be less useful for throwing in a camp oven overnight after shutting it up without the thermal mass of a brick oven but it would use a lot less wood and start up a lot faster. Almost like a kamado but for wood... harder to direct grill on although you can set up a grill directly over the fire in the oven but it gets a bit fiddly.Gumb wrote:A mate of mine was around on the weekend. Keep in mind firewood is a lot cheaper than charcoal!

Re: pizza ovens!
Don't worry, I'm saving up for one of these: http://www.komodokamado.com/
Might take awhile but good things come to those who wait and I've got my kettles to get me by in the meantime...
A fair bit cheaper than what some of my neighbours have spent on their pizza ovens too!
