Building Argentinian grill in Melbourne

Post by Kraj »

Hi everyone, this is my first post on your fantastic forum.
I have a circular fire pit in my back yard which is about 1 metre in diameter.
I am hoping someone could direct me to the right people in Melbourne to help me build a Argentinian type grill to sit over my pit.
More specifically, I would like the grill itself to be set in a frame so that it can be lowered and raised depending on what I am cooking.
I would like it to be portable so that It can be moved into position when needed.
Thanks in advance

Lovely looking backyard! All the resident critters will come and sit by your lovely fire, I bet.

Critters like me, if I can find the location in Melbourne.

Sorry, can't help you with fabrication though.

Thanks its such a lovely spot on cold nights sitting around with friends. When fully loaded the pit can generate some serious heat.
Just need to source the parts and find someone who can weld it together

I can't comment on their quality, but do you mean like this?

Actually more like this

This would allow me to adjust the grill according to the temperature of the pit.
Are the parts available here in Melbourne?

Ah... you're after the true Asado experience. Great stuff.

I'm guessing that as it's an Australian site, yes, you'd be able to order it to Melbourne.

I've been thinking about this over the last couple of days, and - to break it down to the basics - you're after a height-adjustable grill for your existing firepit. I'm a HUGE fan of the German grill known as the "Schwenker"; often referred to outside of Germany as a "tripod grill". There's no reason you couldn't make your own using a Weber kettle grill, with some chains holding it to an overhead hoist. This could be on a tripod, or even a side-arm umbrella.

It's a darned lot cheaper than the price of an Asado grill, and will give similar results (although some would argue it's better as the swaying motion eliminates the effect of hot spots).

Mr Peter this is perfect. The only part I would need to source would be the tripod. Any thoughts where I could get this? I assume ebay would be a start.
Thanks for supplying the link as well. I like how it says the person operating the grill is known as the "Schwenker "

Google for "DIY tripod grill" and you'll see heaps of ideas. I also saw one at Barbeques Galore, but it's listed at not available (at my nearest WA store, at least).

I'd also look at a side-arm umbrella as a substitute for the tripod; they can be bought from pretty much any outdoor furniture store; I got one from Bunnings for my old man at Christmas.

One other thing that must be pointed out in 21st Century Australia (for those of limited intelligence out there): don't use the umbrella canopy over the grill. It will probably catch fire.

Mr Peter has some reasonable advice here :D

And for those interested - if you are in Melbourne - check out this joint if you want a ripping Argentinian style piece of meat.

and Kraj - check this out - not your answer but a reasonable grill. It makes me smile but I know I'll never have something like this - and probably won't ever need one. I just saw it last night and became kinda fixated.
