Picked up a sneaky bag of GMG Fruitwood for next weekend from BBQ Factory and they price matched $40 for those of you nearby to one.

Taren Point didn't have much stock available, only maybe 3 bags left.

Hello!

I'm in Tasmania and I recently bought a GMG Daniel Boone. I will be in touch with Klimt from Spotty Dog to sort out some pellets but I was driving past Pellet Fires Tasmania http://www.pftas.com.au/ I called in and asked if they had any food grade BBQ pellets. They said that they had a basic hardwood pellet that could be used... Being cautious I asked the exact contents of the pellets, I was told it was only hardwood sawdust and a little canola oil to lubricate the pellet making machine. I drove around to the side and bought a bag, 9KG for $15. The bag however has absolutely no labels or signage at all. I'm a bit worried about cooking with these as I'm aware treated pine can be very dangerous to consume. There were two types of pellets on the shelf one with labels and one clear type. The guy gave me the clear one, I asked him if he was sure that it was the pure hardwood one and he said that it was.

Has anyone here had any experience with these pellets? I can't help but feel that I probably shouldn't cook with them :?

I doubt anybody would make pellets out of treated pine anyway. What use would they be ? Not much good for heating I don't think as they still give of nasty stuff. The cheap BBQs Galore pellets are basically the same as what you've just got and they are fine for cooking. They just don't give off the nice smokey flavours of hickory and fruit wood pellets which are 2/3 plain hardwood in the bag anyway.

Thanks Gumb, that's reassuring.

I suppose the other issue is that the salesman said there was a eucalyptus hardwood and a pine softwood. I know that you shouldn't cook over any softwood as it could be toxic and the fact that the bag has no labelling at all means I just have to trust the guy in the warehouse who picked the order. I got the feeling that they don't really deal with anyone who cooks with pellets very often (at all?)

If I use them for grilling only, there will be little to no smoke (or lack of flavour) and they will be an economical alternative.

Cheers.

Traeger recommend using traeger pellets (everyone recommends their own brands) - has anyone had problems with using different brands? Auger gets jammed or anything like that? What brands do people recommend? Im based west of Brissie.

Thanks

I Import BBQr's Delight which are the only pellet recommended by Yoder Smokers.

Try the different brands and always look out for the ash left behind by the cheaper pellets

Try for yourself & take little notice of what people say is the best.
