Shepherds Pie

Post by verithingeoff »

Last night my partner and I tried to bake a couple of small shepherds pies in our gas BBQ. Same recipe we have done dozens of times and very successfully cooked in an electric oven. On the BBQ the potato on top didn't brown properly and the bottom layer of the mince was burnt. We cooked at 180 deg. I'm a lifelong barbequer, but this is the first time using one as an oven.......help, what am I doing wrong.Image

You may need to elevate the pies to where the heat is and thats up in the lid....it will also take the bottom of the pies away further from the heat source.

It may well be best to cook these indirect rather than direct.

A bbq doesn't have elements up top as an oven does.

This may sound sac-religious on this site
but at the risk of stoning
Some things work better in a conventional oven.
The right tools for the job or the ability to solve the shortfalls to make do with what you got

PS I hope your shepards pie had lamb in it and it wasnt a Cottage Pie just pretending :)

did you setup the bbq for indirect cooking ? google foil & trivet method. Basically a double layer of foil sits on the grill (protecting the food from direct heat) , the food sits on a trivet above the foil, allowing the air to circulate around it
