Ziggy vs Weber

Post by stobbsc »

Hi All,

I'm fairly new to the forum and loving all the advice you give to fellow grillers.
I'm in the market for a new Gas BBQ, I've used a 4 burner Corden Bleu for the last 7 years and been pretty happy.

It's not old and the wife needs it to go, so it gives me to change to expand. I want to get a Komodo for my wood and charcol cooking and smoking.

But I need an everyday weekly gas BBQ for quick cooking, roasting etc.
I want to grill, roast and indirect cook for all proteins and vegetables.

Normally I'm cooking for 3 but I entertain a lot so that numbers goes to 10+ on weekends.

I know webber as a brand, my friends and family have them, but Ziggy is getting some good reviews but I don't know anyone who as actually used both and can give a good opinion for me in terms of pro's and con's

Looking forward to your help and suggestions.

Hi Stobbsc,

I can't give you a direct comparison because I've never used the Ziggy range of BBQs but have used the Weber Q range from the small babyQ right through to the Family Q. All 3 being the premium versions with the higher hood and temp guage.

I can't speak highly enough of the Weber range, they are a premium brand and have some of the best product back-up bar none....but they arn't cheap, nothing of real quality really is. Both Q1200 & Q2200 are both portable and can be taken on picnics and other people's places whereas the Q3200 is a primary non- portable style and one that I highly recommend even if you think you wouldn't use the larger size....it's great to have that grill realestate.
All Qs covered by Weber's full 5 year warranty.

Now the Ziggys, there's been a few brands over the years that have tried to cash in on the Weber Q's success, namely Ziggy and the Beefeater Bugg (ugly little bugger  )
The Ziggy was introduced quite a few years ago now by Zeigler & Brown and is now a solid BBQs Galore stablemate. When they first came out I scoffed at them for trying to immitate the Weber Qs but they had model upgrades since then and are now a decent grill. I haven't used one as I said in my intro but having had a good look at them, I can see they have a lot of merit and Z&B have a good range of premium larger style BBQs that have become the Major brand for BBQs Galore. Another thing I noticed about the Ziggy is that is has available a huge range of accesories for such a compact grill and they look to be pretty good quality too.

The question you've got to ask yourself is....would BBQs Galore back the product they sell once it walks out the door and believe me I've read some sad stories of customers getting fobbed off when something goes pair shaped.... but every store is different, some owned by BBQs Galore and some that are franchised.

If you go with the Ziggy, I'd be asking them that if something goes wrong with it...do they back their product 100% and would you get good service if that happens before you hand over your hard earned money...just guage the response of the guy you ask and don't go asking this of the 16 year old casual on weekends...not that there's anything wrong with'the 16 yr old but they barely have any real knowledge of product or experience.

If your budget allows it, I'd be steering you to the Q3200 and getting the optional half hot plate as well....these BBQs really sizzle...had mine now for nearly 5 years and love it.

They say with the Ziggy you can grill with lid up and I'm not doubting that, you can do this with the Q3200 as well but where the Q's really shine is lid down grilling and once you learn to trust the grill to do it's thing, you won't go past lid down grilling again as it keeps the flavour of the food around the food and not up in the atmosphere. You can of course lift the lid as much as you want to check the food but once you get to trust it...you'll be lifting it less and the Q will get to do the job for which it was designed to do....afterall, it was Weber who invented high heat lid down grilling from the start and designed all their products to do likewise and it all started with the humble Weber kettle back in 1959.

Cheers

Hi I love cooking on my weber but I wanted to try something different on the road in the TVAN. I looked at the ziggy for a year and bought the equivalent of the baby q. It was very attractive in size, can cook with the lid open (got the full plate for brekkky) and the top rolls under the bowl to create a flat surface for storage in my camper trailer. It ticked all the boxes. I loved it until I started cooking on it. Each quadrant was a different temperature. Close to the front left I could put things that were done as nothing could cook in that spot. It made no difference if I used the grill or the full plate. I went to the shop and the guy said to be sure the burner was clean. [emoji108]. I finally took it back to the shop I bought it from and asked for a refund. The girl I bought it from was shocked as no one had ever asked for a refund. She was happy to give it though they stand by their word. But she said she could have a technician at my house within 48 hours and I really wanted this thing to work so I agreed. I took it home and set it up and measured the flame at different areas of the burner. It was all over the shop. So assuming the burner was defective or there was an issue with the regulator. I settled in to wait for the tech. Didn't show. After two weeks I took it back and got my refund. They were really great about it but maintained this was the first refund issued. I went and got the baby q and am quite happy with it. I must say that if the customer service hadn't fallen down I might still have that ziggy. They do demos frequently so go try one out and see how you like it.

Here's a simple summary:

Both will cook good food.

* Quite different burner design between the two and thus different cooking experience. Which is better is a personal preference.
* Weber = Lexus quality and service
* Ziggy = Toyota quality and service
* Buy the Q from a specialist Weber store and for $10 to $20 more get a thermometer in the lid and a larger lid compared to the Myer etc version.
* You can get Weber Q using Frequent Flyer or equivalent program so you can get one "free"
* Weber is a global brand and a lot more Webers are sold than Ziggy
* Both have lots of accessories

This forum is fairly pro Weber.

If you asked this question on another Aussie forum, they are more pro Ziggy.

If you asked the other half which is better she would probably say Ziggy as they have a good colour range. For some reason Weber has only released the platinum and black colours in Australia compared to overseas which has a greater range.
