Weber summit pricing

Post by fg1972 »

Hi all,
I've been seriously thinking about buying my next built in BBQ and after looking at the options, I seem to come back to the summit 460 which looks the goods and has wonderful after sales support but I'm not sure if it's worth the price tag. I went into a specialist dealer the other day to have a good look and feel and got the impression that there is little if any discounting on this range. I also compared it to the 470 (trolley version) that was $200 cheaper but I'm not convinced why the built in costs more even though it doesn't come with the side burner. I'm already stretching the budget for a summit and the thought of paying more for a built in that actually has less is sort of putting me off a bit. Just wanted to ask for peoples opinion and or experiences with the summit. Also anyone been able to get a better deal on them?

Truly can't answer that fg1972, I have no idea why a built in would be dearer unless it had something to do with the redesign for the ventilation as it's going to be stuck between some brickwork etc.

My suggestion is before you buy or if a Specialist dealer can't answer your question is to shoot Weber Australia an email asking the team about your query.

I'd be wanting to know the same as you for the money they are asking at the top end of the range.

If you do contact Weber with the question, please let us know the outcome.

Cheers

I bought a summit built in 15 years ago, still going strong after all those years outside and not undercover. It came with a fully insulated stainless surround,it also was delivered by an a guy who installed and tested it. Might be the same with the new models, may account for the extra cost. Without a doubt best gas bbq and after service I've had or seen, nowdays my kamado gets alot more use tho.

Yes good point Hoddo......Weber actually bring the BBQ to your house, assemble and install your new grill, if it's natural gas, connect your bbq if you have an establish ng outlet.

Thank you guys,
I think I will ask the question to Weber direct and see what they have to say.
When I was comparing the two in the shop, the slight differences was the chassis with ventilation out front/back vs sides. Other than that, less the side pods, less the side burner and the slightly different mount for the rotisserie, it looked pretty much the same. The built in even has wheels (covered by the kicker plate) for sliding in and out for maintenance/cleaning.
BTW, in regards to the delivery, assembly and commissioning, this is included for both models not just the built in and in addition to that, both models come in natural gas or LPG options for the same price.
Will let you you what they say.

I've asked the question,

Subject: Summit e-460 vs 470 pricing

Good morning,

I’ve been doing some research for our next bbq that I want to buy.
My requirements are for it to be built in so if I was to go with a Weber, the only suitable options would be the “Q” or the Summit.
Since I’m not real keen on the Q as a built in, it leaves me with the Summit (4 burner in my case) which looks like a fantastic unit that will probably exceed my expectations.
I went down to my local dealer to have a look, feel and compare of the 460 and 470 units. I was told that the 470 is not really suited to a built in installation which is fair enough.
When I compared the two, I noticed that the chassis design was slightly different between the two in regards to venting front and back on the built in vs sides for the other.
Apart from the venting design, slightly different rotisserie mount, no side pods and no side burner, I can't comprehend why the built in is more expensive.
The issue I have in choosing a Summit is that I would be already stretching the budget which I can get over as I’d expect the unit to last a long time so the quality would probably be remembered long after the price is forgotten, however to pay more for a built in that actually comes with less then have to pay even more to buy the side burner is putting me a little off.
So the big question, why does the built in cost more?

Regards

And this was the reply

Thanks for your email.

Glad to hear you are thinking about purchasing our top of the range Summit BBQ!

As you noticed the parts are different between the two BBQs, mostly to integrate the venting that is needed for a built in model, this is the main reason that the E-460 is slightly more expensive. It simply just costs a little bit more to manufacture.

Hope this answers your question.

Thanks

I don't think my question was understood

Thanks for your reply.
If the 460 came with a side burner like the 470 does and is slightly more expensive because of the different design, then I'm more than happy with that.
My point is that the 460 does not come with a side burner but it still costs more than the 470.
If I was to compare apples with apples and have to buy a drop in side burner separately, then it no longer is slightly more expensive hence my original question.

Regards

I don't think they can answer my question

Sorry that you are not happy with my response, but that is just the price point that has been set, I have no further explanation.

A bit of a shame really when spending that kind of cash on a bbq. I guess it is what it is, if you want the built in, there are not many options in the brand and they know it. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be difficult and argue about a couple of hundred dollars, at the end of the day it is a lot of money and I don't want to be a sucker if it can be avoided.
I might try visiting another store, ask them to price up the whole thing including a separate side burner, then see if they are flexible on price and can convince me to see the value in it. If not, there are few good locally made options that I'll probably look at.

Hi Little_O

I ended up getting a Weber q on natural gas for the interim which is working really well. I’ll revisit one of the big bbqs once I’ve redone the outside area. Might be a while as I still need to build a pergola, decking and paving.
