Shipping meat with dry ice?

Post by GarthFader »

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but i'm happy for mods to move it if i've got it wrong...

I've been asked by a heap of friends to make some bacon for them, so i'm doing up about 13kg in total... 4kg of this needs to make it's way from Melbourne to Canberra.

The freight buyer I use at work doesn't deal with refrigerated, so i'm wondering if it's realistic to pack it in a styrene cooler with dry ice and send up. It's generally next day to Canberra on a road freight service, but worst case 2 days. All the reading i've done says that's ok, but three days would be less than amazing.

I could freeze the bacon prior to sending, but then if it's thawed at all when it arrives it would need to be used straight away and couldn't be frozen by the receiver.

Has anyone on here done this?
