Typically the bottom fire grate restricts the air flow. Take it out and you will notice a big improvement in the way the Kamado heats up.
There are lots of different models to suit Kamado Joe, Big Green Egg, generic 18" etc.

Yeah 12x7, I think that it'd make an enormous difference but being able to dispose of the ash outside the Komado would be the seller for me.

I got one form my Arkor Dragon, the air flow is so much better now and I use it to raise the fire as well (for searing).

I ve removed it but I think leaving it could be better as smaller lumps tend to fall through.
