leave in thermometer

Post by bennos »

hello all

im wanting to get a good quality and accurate leave in thermometer. ive tested 3 that i have, each shows a different reading. the variance is up to 20c degrees. one was bought at victorias basement and the other 2 on ebay, each a different brand and price range is on the lower end (under ten bucks).

anyone know of a good one to get?

thanks

Maverick is hard to beat. Igrill also seems decent, although a new model is out here soo a nod would be worth waiting for

I like Mavericks very much, but there are some cheaper, just not sure if they are available there. Do you have anything like Taylor over there?

I had an iGrill, but I find I'm using my eBay cheapy just as much. Nice and simple and reliable.

I think it cost me about $20 landed from Hong Kong. I no longer have a link, but I'm sure a little search would turn them up.

I tried a cheaper one and it failed after a while. Maverick for me.

what im after is accuracy. after the three therms i had in the oven showed vastly different temps, it worries me what the true temp is. All the suggestions seem to be probe style. Anyone use a leave-in therm to get a read of the ambient temp?

have you checked the calibration on them? Boil some water and see what temp they all read.

I think the maverick can be set for pit temp?

Good idea on calibrating with boiling water. However, it is this style (below link) that I have, and want to replace. I like to have this on the rack where I place the meat so I know the temp of the bbq/oven cavity.

How would you be able to hold it at a certain space in the 'pit' with a digital probe?

I can't understand why you don't just buy something like the Maverick ET 733. The probe sits in the pit and the unit sits outside telling you the temp. Good quality, easy to read and you can see the temp without opening the lid.

For me its all too hard haha I'm used to and like having a simple leave-in like the one I linked. No wire, probe and base unit to worry about.

With the one I linked there is a flat base so it makes it easy to put it anywhere. Just wished there was a way to calibrate those style of thermometers. Anyway, I like the idea of using boiling water to calibrate it. Might submerge one in boiling water to work out how much it is out by.

Drop one of those in boiling water and then say goodbye to it.
