Grillgrates

Post by Captain Cook »

[Mod Edit]
The following posts were split away for the thread "Pictures of BBQ Plus Showroom Floor" at the request of the opening Auther. Reason, steered "off topic"

The grill grates I am talking about is the Grillgrate brand with the raised "Tee" and slots in the valleys, Yoder supply them with their pellet grills. This is their website http://www.grillgrate.com/. I will probably need to order them from the states. They are a great invention and from all the reports that I have had and read they work extremely good especially if your BBQ doesn't put out quite enough heat to get that rare steak with good searing.

Captain. Do you think the grillgrates would improve the performance of a q320 for fast cooks/sears? Would they get hot enough in the q, or do they need charcoal/flames for heat?

Not at all. What is your lid temp after 10 minutes and 15 minutes with both burners on High, It should be 580 - 630F.

You would need to remove the CI grills and cut the grill grates to shape, The CI grills will absorb too much heat energy to put the grill grates on top of them

Hi Windsurf,
YES- they will improve the infrared aspect- there is a lot of mass to the CI grate of the Q so it takes a little longer to get the GrillGrates up to temp. YES there will be better searing and the juices give more flavor pop too. BUT the heat won't pop 150F like it does on the Big Green Egg, Yoder or Kettle primarily because its not a high powered grill in the first place. But once hot it will deliver the magic better than no GrillGrates.

I'm not an expert with the q320(i have a 200) by any means but I can't see how grillgrates would be any better than the cast iron grills it comes with. I can see how it would improve a pellet cooker or even a Kamado but a q320 would have more grill heat(as oposed to lid temp)than a pellet cooker and arguably a more even heat than a Kamado. Cast iron is the best grilling surface so id stick with it.

Id agree with that LA1. Most yanky grills have wire or mesh grates so they will benefit with grill grate type products.
The wire holds bugger all real heat, Fine for low and slow but lacking in sear grilling
Cast iron is just as good and does basically the same thing.
It would be a wasted cost to double a grill grate over a cast iron existing grill.
If trees screamed when we cut them down, We wouldn't. If they screamed all the time we would.

I agree with LA1 as well, there would have to be a big improvement in the cooking and I don't see how you would get that out of a Q, they are good. Mine grills, roasts and bakes, uses little gas, is easy to clean for the average punter they do the job very well and at reasonable price. So spending on grill grates and then cutting them to suit and then sitting them on a perfectly good grill already, where is the point?

Did you go ahead with this Cap ?

I want some for the Kamado too. But shipping is $59 which is almost the price of the grates :(

Even buying 2 sets doesn't help much, saves about $10

Cast Iron is a heat sink- takes a long time to heat up and cool down. Aluminum is a heat conductor fast to heat up, even heating and fast to cool down. The GirllGrate is an infrared emitter literally taking any heat source- fire, gas, pellet and converting it to infrared radiant heat. Even with the old grate in place the action is the same. In fact with the old grate in place the temp variation is incredible little. It is a bit unlogical- to put a grate right on top of a grate. BUT it works really well. You should borrow someones & give them a go.
Anyway, just FYI

Normally Aluminium would not hold enough heat to grill effectively. It would cool down too quickly when cold food is whacked on - the reason cast iron works so well in searing is because it takes a lot of heat energy to both heat up and cool down. It stays hot to keep searing even when the food is trying to cool it down. Stainless by comparison is much worse at this.

The reason the grill grate system works is because it makes up for this with a whole heap of aluminium and a small contact area with the food. So the food is still trying to cool down the grate but it can't because aluminium is a fantastic heat conductor and the bulk of the aluminium lower down keeps supplying the heat further up on the rails. It's actually a really cool design.

I still prefer cast iron though - I've never quite gotten over my bias against cooking with aluminium. Even though these are anodised so there is really no logical issue there...

Once you start using them you cant go back, best steaks I have ever cooked.

We did a test a couple of days ago at Joe's Barbecues in Sydney & on a Beefeater Gas BBQ we put cast iron grates & Grill Grates side by side & cooked the same steaks on each.

The steak cooked on the grill Grates was noticeably juicer & had a much better flavour, eating is believing.
