buying from Asian butchers

I know what you mean about presentation. I frequent a couple around the Hurstville area and one in particular has cuts of meat that are unrecognisable. I just point to a lump and say that will do. Never had a problem with any meat from an Asian butcher even where their refrigeration looks a bit suspect.

I think the main thing about keeping costs down is most of them dont have to pay the ridiculous rent Westfield charge and they have a high turnover.

Do you think there is a difference in how the pigs are grown just because they come from an Asian butcher?

Essentially. Don't get me wrong, you can buy intensive farmed pork at any butcher or the supermarket too, but at the Asian butcher that is exactly what you get.

These Asians yeh?? First they come into our country.. steal our rights.. and now raise pigs like all these other commercial farms which make up most of the market.

Thanks Mate I will give it a try. I am mostly looking for affordable Pork Ribs, I buy lots of meat from the Meat emporium but their Ribs are priced like Gold

Mate for American style pork ribs the place in Kogarah is not too good. They trim way too much and you'll pay $17 for bones. On the other hand they have the less pretty part of the rib closer to the backbone and forequarter ribs that are usually around $7 to $8 per Kg.

They aren't much to look at and very irregular, but you might want to give them a try to see if you like them.

Look for them in the display cabinet that's behind the counter where they serve you. That's also where they keep pork hocks and other cheap off cuts.

I don't think it's necessary to go to the "call someone a racist" card yet. Actually I think that's pretty rude, especially given that I didn't make any comments about Asians coming to our country or stealing our rights.

My only point is that Asian butchers only offer very low welfare pork. If you don't want to support that, you have to go elsewhere.

The pork processing industry is complex. It is not as simple as all retailers buy from the same processor. You should know that you, as a customer, have influence on how your meat is produced.

How do you go about showing that every Asian butcher in the country "only offer very low welfare pork"

By observing. One of the ways we learn stuff. Yes, it's a generalisation, but a fairly accurate one.

It's hard to tell where our pork comes from and I'm sure most Asians like anyone would like free range pork.
To those that think about poor farming then good, Tell us about it. Let's educate each other rather than single out the Asian butcher because I can tell you, Up here there are no Asian butchers but there are plenty Caucasian butchers selling unethical farmed pig. Only reason I know is because I have inside knowledge from a butcher mate that buys in free range.
His particular commercial clients demand it.
As consumers, We are better off pointing the finger at the government and demand the standards change and making food choices when you are sure.
