oil out of date?

Post by the dane »

does cooking oil go out of date? The father in law has a 4liter drum of rice bran oil in his beer fridge, never been open but 3 years past its expired date!

If it has an expired date, then probably yes. Best before date is a bit different.

Rice bran oil is very rich in Vitamin E complex and antioxidants which will protect it from oxidation, and if it's been stored in the fridge the whole time you might have a slim chance of it being ok.

Best bet would be to open it up and give it a smell and/or taste.

Everything has an "expiry" date or "best before" date on it these days.
Many things will last a lot longer than these days, give it a smell/taste as suggested

Id bet the rice bran oil is probably still good.
Give it a taste, If it has a tin can or metalic taste ditch it as it could be "Canned" Thats kill ya bad opposed to just being stale.
Or just take the loss and ditch it knowing that not picking up the loaded gun and taking it to a gun fight may have saved you.
Thats what I would do. 40 bucks worth of oil or my loved ones in hospital :?:
I know its hard as Ive done it many times. When I make a decision to throw stuff out, I just let it go and get on.
One year?,, sure, Two?,, Maybe, Three?,, Bit long in the tooth and is when "Canning" starts to happen
If trees screamed when we cut them down, We wouldn't. If they screamed all the time we would.

If it's been in the fridge then the chance of 'canning' is even great as the condensation on the exterior may have cause oxidation of the exterior and disrupt any foodsafe lining on the interior.

My golden rule for food, "If in doubt, chuck it out". One dose of food poisoning was enough for me, 4 days, ended up in hospital spewing blood.
