Weber 220 Vs Bugg

Post by steve_newie »

Well gentlemen, ive got a bit of a dilemma on my hands. My old gasser has finally kicked it 5 years in and im in the market for a new one.

One I can take camping with me is a priority and both of these models appeal to me. Ive been trolling your threads for a few hours now and although I hear mention of both the bugg and the 220, havent been able to find a stand-off or direct comparison to base my judgement on which is better and/or better bang for buck.

Can anyone help a less experienced bbq maestro out?

Not without being accused of being biased

You can accuse me of being biased.
At this stage I say the Weber.

Quality, proven track record, backup service, I'd have to say Weber.

Both brands are known for quality and service. The Bugg has higher heat output, bigger roasting hood, sturdier side shelves and can cook with the lid up. The Bugg is a new product whereas the 220 has been around for yonks. I have a cpl of Beefeaters and inherited a q220(came with the missus).

I'd go the Bugg hands down.

On the surface, Id agree with LA1 and would be the bbq out of the two for me(Still iffy about the controls location but I have had a go at one and not such a big deal)
However, the weber has the yards in the park.
They both do the same things, But the bug will sear a medium rare or rare steak.
The weber 220 will struggle with this.
For most people that isnt an issue as they like there steak just pink inside (Medium well)
Maybe some more info of your likes and expectations would help narrow it down for YOU ?

Place them side by side and then talk to someone who has assembled and used both, call both and tell them that the lid is damaged and ask for a replacement. Ask for a second grill instead of a hotplate on the bugg. Ask how to cook honey and soy chicken wings on both (they should be cooked indirect)
Ask them to cook a steak for you on both.
That should give you a starting point to consider.

I like to do wings direct on low-medium heat, seasoned or spice rubbed. Then towards the end baste with favourite wing sauce(current fav is Outback Spirit WIld Lime and soy wing sauce) to form a glaze and finish cooking with the lid down. Fantastic results. Captains method would be great also. :)

Rodney

Try this

Chicken Wings with Honey and Soy
2 kg chicken wings
Marinate
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon sweet chilli sauce
1 tablespoon of oyster sauce
1 tablespoon of hoi sin sauce (or use 2 tablespoons of oyster sauce)
1 teaspoon ground garlic flakes
1 teaspoon Chinese 5 spice
Place marinate ingredients in a glass jug and microwave on high for 15 seconds (no longer) remove and stir thoroughly.
Cut the chicken wings at each joint and discard wing tips. Place the wing pieces and marinate in a zip lock bag, marinate in the refrigerator overnight.
Preheat the Q on high for 10 minutes. Place the wing pieces on a trivet sitting on a doubled over sheet of foil and cook indirectly for about 25 minutes until cooked through. Internal temperature should be about 83 C.

Added trick to above recipe

Brush wings with honey 3-5 minutes before finish.
I nuke the honey for 10 seconds to thin it down and make it easier to brush on.

Don't tell anyone about this trick, its my secret method.
