Replacing Kamado Joe casters / wheels on cart

I have a large Kamado Joe which is over 10 years old. Back then you only had the large Kamado Joe and the Big Joe.

The original cart wheels are plastic and reknown to break and crack leaving the hub.

I was pretty lucky it seems that my wheels lasted so long.

Rather than replace the wheels with the plastic type it is a popular option to put on larger rubber wheels.

Broken down to the plastic hub

To replace the caster the stem must be 12mm or M12 in diameter and with the caster stem thread 1.75 TPI.

I bought 4x 4" rubber with brakes for $35 including freight.

Original plastic 3" on left and 4" rubber on the right. Some people buy 5" casters. I bought all the casters with brakes to be more versatile than the original 2 x front with brakes and 2 x back without.

Locked the front casters and used pavers to lift up the kamado so the back wheels were high enough to take them off. The back wheels were easy. Just screwed them off.

Took away the pavers and locked the back wheels and put the pavers in the front to lift the front casters off the ground.

The front casters were seized on. Used some WD40 to loosen them up. Left for awhile and got some long nose pliers to get them off. If you have the right size spanner you can use that too.

Wow, those casters didn’t age well did they. It’s good that you could source a replacement. Which look pretty sturdy as well. Should get another 20 years easy!
How’s the legs and bands holding up? Now that will be a task to refurbish

The cart is looking good. Bands are ok. Been through a couple of set of hinge/lid springs. Gave up the ceramic deflectors and now use a cast iron pizza pan. Big crack in the fire ring and waiting for it to totally fail and a couple of cracks on the firebox.
