Post by Cambo2534 »

New to this forum and hoping someone will be able to help. In the process of designing a diy habachi charcoal grill and are wondering what is the ideal height to have the grill plate/rack above the charcoal.?

Hi and welcome Cambo,

A hibachi is traditionally a ceramic type table grill originally from Japan and is used to grill hot and fast like Yaki-niku (grilled beef, pork and vegetable pieces quickly and evenly over charcoal. They are also used to grill chicken skewers called Yaki-tori. Most hibachi type grills have a charcoal to food distance of around 15cms or 6 inches.
There's plenty of the ceramic Hibachi on ebay for under $100, they have 2 grilling sections where you can have 2 heat ranges on each side. Or for about $139 you can buy a sturdy enameled steel hibachi from Weber called the go anywhere, could probably take more bumps than a ceramic one and is very portable. Might be cheaper to buy one than make one, especially as Weber have a 5 yr warranty on theirs.

Cheers
