Spits for whole lamb

Is 1200mm long enough or should I spend the extra and get a 1500 spit?

Steel thickness.. The thicker the better, right?

I've seen some gas charcoal combinations. Could be an interesting way to start the coals up, or even to maintain a low heat to keep the meat warm until the rest of the feast is ready.

For all the experienced roasters, is there anything to watch out for? Any particular lemon brands to avoid etc?

I Have a 1250 stainless spit and struggle to put a 16klg lamb on it without trimming the legs.
For that reason would go the 1500.
Mine is a combination fuel, you cant light the charcoal with the gas.
I have only used gas a few times in about 8 years, that was due to fire-ban.
Unfortunate we have a few family birthdays end of January in Victoria.
Cant help with Brand names as untill this one from Carnze engineering I have always built my own

Are You in Victoria?
Motors can be bought online here

Dont go cheap on motor,go bigger, and make sure you Balance the cook, counterbalances work well, ( so does a heavy vice grip)

Thanks for the advice

I'm based in Sydney. I'll check out the websites you linked.

How did you rate the gas cook in terms of taste?
Did it take longer to cook?
Was one gas bottle enough for the while cook?

Sorry about all the questions :)

Do not be sorry at all for Questions.
I honestly dont remember the taste, maybe the beers, but ! with gas the fact that juice is rolling over the meat has to be good.
never used a full bottle of gas for a lamb.
My Lamb cooks always take a long time and they are planned that way, its part of the socializing that goes with it.

I had a look at the models a www.bbqspitrotisseries.com.au/ . Decent quality but available sizes were 1200mm and 1500mm. One might be a touch small, the other too big for my needs. In the end went with one I found at www.thebbqstore.com.au/ which was a whole lot cheaper. Its most likely chinese made but perfect size at 1300mm and fully stainless with 60kg motor. For my needs (2-3 lamb spits a year around the 11-15kg mark) it is perfect and paid well under $1000 all up including a stack of extras. I keep mine undercover and line it all with foil before use so minimal mess and keeps in good nick.

Love a lamb on the spit.
I might do one this long weekend now the thought has got my hungry!

Cheers
