Re: Start off charcoal
I'd recommend you determine the most common type of BBQ you do,
i.e. do you BBQ for just yourself, for 2 or regularly for more?
Then look at the charcoal BBQ's that can handle your best scenario.
If I'd followed my own advice I would have started with a Kamado,
then I wouldn't have 7 or 8 other BBQ's lying around doin' nuttin'
The Akorn from Bunnings is a very good BBQ and at $499, or
cheaper sometimes, is really good value.

Re: Start off charcoal
Hi M.D thanks mainly cook for 2/3 but also do like to bbq for when we entertain. I have seen those kamados. Are they good and easy to use? I was at bcf looking at those charmate charcoal smoker....wondering if that would be a good starting point @ 99 buks. Any thoughts on this? Thanks. G.G.
Re: Start off charcoal
G'day GG,
that charmate smoker is only 41cm across, where a standard Weber kettle is 57cm. Not that I'm trying to sway you either way, but you get a fair bit more cooking real estate on a kettle and kettles are a bit more versatile than a vertical/bullet type smoker. Bunnings have a knock off kettle for $60, which isn't a very big investment.

Re: Start off charcoal
Well was a busy w/end searching & looking at charcoal qs.
Bunnins, bbqG, . boy there is a lot now. Zero result. But today a mate finds this while on a job he was doing.
It was in a bunch of stuff they were getting ready for a garage sale.
Now I need to know did we get a good buy for 120 bucks. Supposed to be an American bought weber that has travelled from there to Russia, N.Zealand and on to aussie land. Needs a little work but.
Any thoughts or suggestion on cleaning? or whatever.
Thanks. GG

Re: Start off charcoal
Red - that's special Most of them are black.
Some soap and water to clean the outside.
Fire her up with some charcoal eg heat beads to burn off the crap and give the grill a scrap when it is hot to get rid of the gunk.
First cook put some cheap meat on, eg cheap sausages from Coles to season. Then its ready to go!

Re: Start off charcoal
It has been suggested that we soak the bits in caustic soda wash overnight then rub with some suet fat?
Then cook up some cheap stuff like you said 12 x7. do you or anyone else have any thoughts on this.
And can any one tell me what this model is ? eg/ American? as have been told or how can I tell?
Thanks.G.G. Ohh and what is special with the red?

If there's a heap of built-up gunk on the bars, you can also put them in a tub with hot water with washing up detergent in them, and leave overnight. I'd still try burning the crap off first...
