Akorn + Weber 7441 grate

Post by 12x7 »

Council clean-ups are a great time to score freebies.

I found a discarded Weber kettle and the main grate had already been taken but the 7441 fire grate had been left behind.

The poor kettle had been unloved for years.

For the Akorn and Dragon users here's what you can do with a Weber 7441 fire grate.

The photo was taken before I cleaned the fire grate.

As you can see it fits very nicely and sits just above the coals. Great for searing steaks. It is also a great platform to put stuff on, eg pizza pan to act as a deflector. Round KJ deflectors. Drip tray etc.

You may also notice I am not using lump charcoal but Firebrand briquettes. Since they are manufactured turds they offer predictable heat output. They also are low smoke for those type of cooks when you want it that way.

Now I won't have to keep borrowing the fire grate from my kettle in the Akorn.

Great idea. Was going to do 2 thick ribeye steaks on friday night on the performer SEAR & ROAST, but might use the Akorn instead weather permitting and the wife.

it is also real easy way to do a reverse sear.

Put a pizza tray on the 7441 grate to act as a deflector. Cook the steak on the main grate or extender. Grate temp is @100C like low and slow.

When you are ready, take out the main grate/extender and pizza tray and crank up the heat and drop the steaks onto the 7441 to do the sear.

This technique is far easier than doing a reverse with the Chargriller smoking stone which gets really hot to remove for the sear phase.

You can put the fire on the Weber grate and then cook on the top grate indirect and the high temp sear direct to finish
