We seem to get a lot of questions about where to buy charcoal and the answers are spread far and wide across the forum. This thread was in the BBQ Products section but I think it has been lost there to some extent so I've moved it to the Charcoal section as a 'sticky' and left a ghost copy in the BBQ Products section which will refer back to this thread.

It may need updating and I'd like to think of a way to break the answers down by state as well.

Any suggestions or updates welcome. If any charcoal sellers are members, feel free to post your details and charcoal prices here too.

Tried to purchase through Tennco in NSW and they were only wholesale..

Ended up buying a bag from Emberpak, great service and the lump looks good so far.

Great to hear you picked up some Emberpak charcoal it's really good stuff
Sad to hear about Tennco, I've purchased there charcoal 3 or 4 times and have only bought 2 to 4 bags each time which is hardly wholesale, each time it's only taken a phone call and it was delivered the next day

Yeah I called and they started giving me names of retailers that sold their product, no idea maybe some one else can confirm.

damn.. I was going to try them next.

Australian product to me seems like a better choice than imported Thai.. (I worry about the environmental implications of the Thai product).

Emberpak are super easy to deal with though.

Nice talking to you this arvo Hogsy.... I can see that BBQAroma has been left off the list as a retailer of charcoal, but I can say that we have a strong customer base for natural charcoal and have seen an increase in sales since starting our niche BBQ business over 7 years ago. Natural BBQ Charcoal is alive and kicking folks!

I see some are disapointed here that Tennco has closed the door on some charcoal retail customers wanting to order. To be fair to Tennco, they try to help everyone but yes they are mainly a distributor/wholesaler. I've spoken to the owner and he brought it up that he needed help to deal with the increase in customers wanting to buy charcoal.

For those that don't know, I'm one of Tennco's resellers and with their help and support have developed Sydney's own specialist charcoal shop. Our location is 425 Parramatta RD Leichhardt. Open 6 Days a week and we sell heaps of Gidgee, Mallee and Redgum as well as Indo and African lump (all supplied via Tennco). We are better equipt than Tennco to manage the 1 and 2 bag orders at the shop - however we have been working behind the scenes to get some special delivery rates to start HOME-DELIVERY of charcoal in the next couple of months.

At this stage the intention is to ship 5 or 8 bags of charcoal at a time to customer between Newcastle, ACT and Wollongong. Still working on the idea but hopefully we will make it easier for customers where they can order and pay online.

Will let you all know when our delivery service is up and running.

Thanks for chiming in Nik, my bad I guess I didn't realise that Tennco no longer do retail and after chatting with both Nik from BBQ Aroma and Sharon from from Tennco I can understand why. I didn't realize the production of charcoal relies on weather conditions so much and although Tennco are out of stock BBQ Aroma have a couple of pallets of the stuff
BBQ Aroma are selling the same product at the same price as Tennco and it's great stuff. So anyone chasing Gidgee give BBQ Aroma a call

What is the difference between using heat beads and lump charcoal. Also is there any taste difference.

Heat beads let off a funny smell and this can get in to whatever you are cooking. We always suggest cooking with Mallee Root Charcoal. Mallee Root Charcoal also burns hotter than heat beads.

Whilst HB are perfectly fine, after experimentation I prefer the taste of meat cooked with lump charcoal.

The heat from HB can often be more consistent than charcoal , and I suspect from observations that charcoal may require slightly more airflow at lower temps to maintain the same temperature (although I have not fully tested this theory)

This really depends on what you are cooking in....and what style of cooking it is.

Cheers
