BBQ/COOK BOOKS

Post by henry »

Not sure if there is a discussion here

I collect bbq and cook books. It's bordering obsession my wife calls me passionate, but we are running out of room for them. This is my latest pick up from the Library (to curb the collecting). Beautifully shot book some good ideas in there.

What's your favourite, or what are you currently reading/digging?

That looks interesting, good cover photo. Let us know if it's got any unique recipes.

Given up on buying cookbooks because I moved twice in a couple of years while we were building and a collection gets heavy and takes up room apparently.

Internet is the new bookshelf at my place, even has a translate function.

I've got a few books but not 100% happy with any of them. They seem to skate around the edges of proper instruction, although I do like Steven Raichlen's books.

I like his books too. I have this one.

I like how he is not exactly precise with things. Seems to use higher temps to me, which makes me feel more comfortable when cooking. Kinda gets me thinking we stress over temps a little too much.

Lol, love it! I have so many cookbooks that I love to read (look at recipes and photos) that I have never actually cooked anything from....!

I can relate to the comments above, Particularly re books ive never cooked from.
However they do give insperation to do something "Like"
If trees screamed when we cut them down, We wouldn't. If they screamed all the time we would.

:)

I really hate to think how many, my wife is as avid a cookbook person as me.

Referring back to how I measured my full library in UG's thread I would guess maybe 7 metres of cookbooks?

No, I hardly ever follow a recipe either, more interested in techniques, tools etc and just ideas :)

:)

I went and had a look at the shelves - you can always tell which you've at least referred to whilst cooking, food stains :)

Seems like two - an old soft cover Woman's weekly, "Cooking Class" need a new one but been out of print a while. That one has the basis of a good pate recipe but also a couple of other things, bit of a diamond in the rough.

The other is the original Greta Anna - unbeatable basis for bearnaise, the rest of it is sort of "entertainment" I've no idea what audience that book was written for :)

I think it comes down to cooking not being about being put in a straitjacket, and recipes can be just that.

I tend to just get an idea or a hankering head to the kitchen and see what ingredients I'm missing then work around it :)

(Mind you, given the food stocks we have you'd think we had a family of ten, not two and a cat :) )

Cheers

Have you guys seen/have this book. It's great, and made me really understand bbq culture. I picked it up for $5 on one of those book tables you see at westfields. Books4less from memory.
