that is what i have been trying to preach at you.

no matter how many comps a particular rub or sauce has won, your tastes are different to the owner and judges. sure buy them, give them a shot, then tweak those suckers and make them yours.

Here is one book I would never recommend.

Australia's own Cookbook for the Weber Q

I recently wanted to cook a Butterflied leg of lamb on the BBQ, I have done this countless times in the oven.

Lamb Grilled Greek

The Marinade suggested is the standard lamb Marinade.

I always marinate in a plastic freezer bag get as much air out as possible tie up and leave in the fridge over night ( No Mention of this)

No mention of how to do it.
Instruction is Grill on the BBQ for 10 minutes each side.
STILL LOOKING FOR ANY THING GREEK????

Found it last two words Greek Salad.
Now that means rice becomes Asian, and Curry sauce Indian, and on it goes.

The way the recipes are in the book its use index for each recipe eg Lamb "8" different pages.

I would love to buy a good BBQ book but I cannot get to Melb to a decent book shop these days and no book shop in my area.

That means dig out all my old BBQ books and just convert and take notes as I go.

I am far from new using a BBQ the old gas lasted over 30 years and use a wood fired BBQ from the early 60s, and before that the top of mums wood stove and that was about too old to remember exactly but about late 40s.

On the other hand, if you want to replicate a dish time and time again then you must use a recipe. Guessing or changing quantities, adding, substituting or removing ingredients, changing cooking times and temperatures and so on will give you a similar (or sometimes completely different) dish but it will not be the same.

Sometimes recipes are wrong and/or you change them to suit your tastes but it holds true that following recipes is the best way to repeat a great outcome (and often to get the first one).

....and it's why so many competition cooks are anal about not having the cooker temperature fluctuate even a couple of degrees....it eliminates one variable in the "recipe"....or so they think!

Any new recipe I see on the WWW I will rewrite it in a step by step method.

It is also doubled spaced for my notes.

Then I will still keeping the original recipe add in all my notes and print it out again.

By doing that I can follow it easy and it makes cooking a lot easier, especially if I have to convert ingredients, measurements, and temperatures.

I take pictures, both of the recipe and the finished product.

I file them under similar names and have access via the cloud on any device I need them on, creating my own cookbook!

Use mostly the bottom 3 these days. In particular Paul Kirks that promotes as others above have said about developing ones own recipes through experimentation.

For online recipes, "Cookn" is pretty handy software to screen scrape and organise most larger sites ideas, unfortunately not forums... http://www.dvo.com/?CID=G_Cookn_home&gc ... pQodBloAzQ

yeah..........that's right i keep forgetting..............cooking logs, damn i forget how many BBQ meals i have done the WOW on, and, forgot what i did. the ones that go to the dogs, hey i don't need to remember anyway.

but...................there is one big problem here, with me, the visit to the herb garden makes it impossible to remember where i keep my readers, or even how to read. what looks right goes in and you TASTE TEST all the way.

BBQ cook books look real pretty, but as the member who claimed the weber one is useless, i agree, the weber Australian "Q" cookbook is only good for a coffe table thingy.

smoke and spice got me through some cool things, also some good reading there into the history of American BBQ............

so yeah, that is my bible....
