Seven Fires is my favourite barbecue book, not a bible but certainly one you should have in your library

I don't think there is one book that says it all!

Seven fires is a great book (and should be in everyones collection), also Peace Love and BBQ, Wicked Good BBQ, Charred and Scruffed, Stephane Reynauds Barbeque, Sublime Smoke, the list goes on and on!

At the moment I'm reading the Salt Lick Cookbook.

Cheers

I must admit, for a novice like myself, the Weber Complete Australian Barbecue Kettle Cookbook certainly helped me greatly in learning about cooking times and how to use the kettle properly.

Quick side note - this site has taught me far more than any cook book I've ever read though ! :D

I just bought "Planet BBQ" and am amazed at how much it covers in terms of international bbq cuisine - eg. US, Thai, South American, African, Indian, Carribean, Russian, etc - you get my drift.....

It all depends on how in depth you want to get on each bbq topic - for example for serious sausage making, Charcuterie, smoking, etc you'd need a very focussed book like ruhlman's 'Charcuterie'.

Some of my favourite bbq cookbooks are:

The river cottage meat book
Planet Barbeque
Ribs, Ribs, Ribs
Smoke and spice
Fired up
More Fired Up

Just remembered another that is well worth the investment

Sophie Grigson's Charcuterie and French Pork Cookery. It's pretty cheap and gives the basis for much of what we do now. I even ordered saltpetre to try it out. It made me feel guilty enough that I had to explain what it wa for thinking they might think I wanted to make gunpowder :)

The best cook book is the one that inspires you to act

Its a good question, Id say that the books put out by manufactures a good for the very basics.
Next comes forums, I cant count how many times members past and present, Me including have done "live" cooks with other members helping them along the way, That help is gold and better then any book.

Once you nut out your choice of bbq, I find the best cook books are theamed, Like moroccan, Asian, etc.
They inspire me and give far more info on one particular type of food that I can adapt over to my particular pit.
All of my bbq cook books got read then placed on a dusty book shelf. I found they only had one way of doing anything in particular.
Like roast duck in orange sauce,, Nice but none of the hundreds of other ways to do duck.
So If I see a book that only talks about poulty and game birds ?, Ill jump on it
If trees screamed when we cut them down, We wouldn't. If they screamed all the time we would.
