Lovey wrote: Mon Mar 04, 2019 8:32 pm Ha ha, I wondered where some of the top section had gone when I checked in tonight.

My thoughts on trimming down the equipment section would be to try and group by fuel type,

- gas (includes gas smokers)
- wood (including pellets, camp fire, offsets, WFO's)
- charcoal (kettles, kamados, portables like WGA and smokey joe)
- electric (electric smokers, electric pizza ovens)

The recipe and cooking section could be a bit harder, but I'll have a think about it over the next few days.

All the best,
Steve.
There was a lot of unused crap in the top section including Paulr's initial Welcome from June 2007 that was irrelevant these days...also the bargains and flea market nobody has used for yonks....so yeah that was first experiment.

But Steve, I have an issue, I had a look in the admin room looking how I can merge or organise similar to what you suggested but I couldn't find a suitable solution on how I can do it...I'm not that knowledgeable on the nitty gritty of forum IT stuff and if I stuff it up, there's no reversing it,,,,no undo...so I've got to be very careful.

If I get Paulr to do it, he's presently in Japan for a skiing holiday so not sure when he'll be back. I'll keep looking for ways to do it....I'm sort of in 2 minds about food type though. and from Moving one sub forum into another forum box...say for example, What did you cook into say the food type forum. Because I haven't had the need to delve into the deep end for a long time, I've forgotten a lot of the back room controls lol.

It's still a good forum, especially for the back catolog. But photo bucket did pull most of there images. Think flickr are still up. Facebook bbq pages start of well but quickly get boring, as in a photo of a coles sausage cooking on a grill. Here it was socialising fun entertainment. But it quickly got ugly and out of controll. I still have a quick read every now and then if tapatalk is working. Maybe one day the numbers will come back, to make it what it used to be, fun.

Hi Dane,

Yeah mate, Lovey and I are trying to condense the forum a bit so it's not too large, theres a lot of sections that haven't been used for a long time so we're trying to condense them and merge them with similar topics so they are all in one.

A forum is what members make it, it's a place where they want to come and chat about BBQ and stuff, Mods and admin can't make a forum on their own, there's got to be participation.

You're right about Photo-bucket though, they did enormous damage to forums like this, so many forums I had belonged to had a similar issue with missing photographs but I believe they've seen the error of their ways and recommenced photosharing...to offer something like that for free then hold people and forums to ransom like this is not good and i'm sure did irrepairable damage to themselves as well. I had to get Paul to do something so we can put pics on the forum without 3rd party which we can now but they need to be downsized first which is a pain in the arse because even most phone cameras today make huge pixel pics. We're still trying to find a better solution but i'm even finding that over at SF&F that pics have to be resized too so not only our older forum format.

So..we're trying to tidy up....see how it goes.

Cheers

Just as another possible contributor to the lack of new posts ... I was away for a few months, just tried to login this morning and it's taken just on 2 hours!

I am 100% certain I was using the correct login and password. But, had to do a password reset, three times! None of the prior two password rest emails arrived.

Users do not have time to be stuffed around like this. Basic admin should just work. If it doesn't, then people move on. Life's busy. Other options exist that are easier.

Why had my password changed?

Why is the password reset process so slow / difficult?

Good luck, but it feels like, sounds like this forum is in it's death rolls.

And, as for the owner thinking it's worth something... Value of forum = active users, measured by repast user login over a weekly period. This forum would be low value, even with some Google ad revenue.

....but they still can't do what Weber has been able to do and that is to design a BBQ that will safely high heat grill with the lid down ...
I 100% agree there are some dangerous BBQs out there. But, as you say design has come a long way.

I 100% disagree with your statement above though as there are plenty of lid down models equal to or IMHO better than a Weber.

Horses for courses.

And, as for needing two gas bottles on the bigger 4 or 6 burner non Weber style BBQS... Mate, seriously give it a rest. A gas bottle on a Weber can run out at anytime too, so it's wise to have two for ANY gas BBQ. Whether that is another 9kg or smaller 4.5kg doesn't matter.

And, while we're on that subject again, you do not use all 4 or 6 burners at once, and if used, is rarely for long. Once my plates are hot, I'm rarely above low on two burners for cooking.

I totally understand you like your Weber, and we like many use BBQ a differently. Each to there own I say ... But, sorry, this whole gas burner other brands need two bottles is doing my head in... As I wrote above and previously... ANY bbq can run out at anytime so.a spare bottle is always handy.
You are correct in saying any Gas BBQ can run out....even a Weber....all I'm saying is that in my experience and what i'm used to is that the BBQ I had with multiple burners went through a 9kg much quicker than my Weber Qs and the V8 supercar thing was first used by me as a slight attempt of some humour by using it as a comparison. My Family Q for example is using a 9kg tank, it's lasted me pretty much all of summer, mostly because I hadn't cooked on it as much as usual but because of the hot ambient temps this season, it doesn't take long to get up to heat and I don't have to have it quite as high a temp. Was only using the term as comparison but I mostly always have 2 tanks on hand, a 9 % 4 kg. My Current 9kg can't be filled anymore, it's just passed it's 10 year useby date so i'll go and buy another 2 shortly. The Gasmate ones from Bunnings are pretty good and reasonably priced. I didn't mean to do your head in BBQ Dad
Mate, your experience, your opinion.

My comments. My opinion.

As they say YMMV.

Just remember a multiple burner BBQ does not need all burners running all the time.

I'm still on the original 9kg bottle I hooked up to the new Eurogrillle. BBQ couple of times a week. Using only one or two burners most times.

I have no idea why you had issues with your password other than making a typo or something but as long as you were able to reset it, that's good, you were able to make those 2 posts.

I've been pretty flatout with work lately doing 12 hour days so have been pretty tired the past few weeks and haven't been on here much myself....but yeah...I understand what you're saying and all I can say is sorry you're experience here hasn't been what you expected...I'm the only admin member who bothers to answer people's posts here...for how long though...I don't know.

I tried to revive this forum but i'm busier than ever with work.....might be the time to let it die completely perhaps :(

A most interesting thread. Tells the story of what can happen in forums and with human nature generally. All the best, Davo. I take my hat off to you for keeping the embers glowing. On the up side, I think that interest in bbqing, and talking about it, has a great future now we have to find a way to live with coronavirus. It may not take much in the way of good luck to kick things off again. In the meantime I will take advantage of all the good info here. :D

I thought this forum was finally gone a few weeks ago when it disappeared. Still pretty quiet. I guess for the forum old timers there’s only so many times you can post a photo of what you’re cooking.

I guess I could comment on how expensive meat is nowadays and you need to win the lottery to eat it regularly. It’s a brave man experimentally on your Q $100 worth of meat.

Yeah 12x7 I had thought it was gone too and that Paul decided to pull it but it was something to do with an update issue and of course he wouldn't have known about it if I didn't alert him that it was down. A little bit of me was hoping it didn't resurface....but it did

Yeah ya not wrong about the meat, even cheap cuts are getting exxy. The Summer in Sydney hasn't been all that rosey, it's rained more than not, and I don't have any under cover cooking areas in the place I rent so I haven't been able to cook much lately anyway but when I do it's generally something quick n easy like a steak or chicken wings and a lotta veggies.

Hey ya ever done Spam on the grill....it's pretty darn good albeit salty.

But yeah....I'm still here with all me mates

Haven’t done Spam, but if you remember the days of canned ham at Christmas, have fond memories of a few slices/ham steaks cooked and scooping off the tasty jelly with a spoon.

A few slices of cooked salami and fried eggs is tasty too.
