Bbq advice

Post by Little_o »

Trying to pick a good bbq for our outdoor kitchen.

Family all swear by the Webber summit which is great but on the $$$$ side especially when trying to do a kitchen.

What’s a good alternative? Been looking around and they all seem to vary considerably.

Looked at some beef eaters, euro, gasmate and even the blue tongue. Just not sure what’s what and would appreciate some advice as far as quality and cooking.

What should we be looking for?

Hi and welcome Little_o

Can you describe a little how your outdoor kitchen will look like, will it be made of brick, or maybe Stainless steel tables with underneath storage....will the kitchen be covered by a roof of some kind as you'll need good ventilation. Will the BBQ of choice be a slide in or can it be on cabinet and wheels. And my last question is...does it have to be a gas BBQ?

Reason I ask this is that there's some awesome woodpellet BBQ available these days that can heat up and be ready and quick as gas, you can slow smoke, roast, grill and even rotisserie on a wood pellet grill. If I ever get my own house again, t's going to have a woodpellet BBQ...I had one before so I know how good they are....you have quite a few in Australia now Traeger, GMG, Yoder, Louisiana grills. They all have wheels trolly units that can move around for easy cleaning. Most apart from the Yoder which is competition quality but still cheaper than a Summit are around the price of a quality Gas grill.

Next you'll have to let us know on how many people will you normally entertain, just a few family and the occasional few friends or do you have big gatherings like 20 plus....the Pellet grills will easily cook for a decent party.

Ok Now Gas
Yes the Summit is not cheap, but when you're building something like an outdoor kitchen, this is an investment towards your lifestyle and I know for a fact your Summit will still perform and look good in 10-15 yrs if you look after it. But as BBQ Dad found out, there's also some good stuff that can be had online.

If you don't want to fork out for the weber Summit but you still want a Weber...they have just encorporated their Q range into a slide in https://www.weberbbq.com.au/weber-q/built-in/

then the Genesis range but I'm not sure if they have a built in version of the Genesis

and of course theres the Summit....https://www.weberbbq.com.au/barbecues/p ... 460-built/
https://www.weberbbq.com.au/barbecues/p ... 660-built/

Then you have....

https://www.barbequesgalore.com.au/barb ... e/built-in

These ideas might help too with outdoor kitchens

Anyway...hope this helps a bit...some you already may have considered....but hey...give the pellet BBQs a look too...all you need is an electric outlet for the thermostat and fan to work and a bag of wood pellets...not more gas cyclinders running out unexpectedly.

Cheers

Thanks for all the info Davo!

I will definitely look into the wood pellet bbq’s haven’t heard of them before.

As far as looks go:

It will be the typical straight line kitchen, sitting in our alfresco which has a brick wall behind it, pitched pergola style roof. The wall it will sit on is adjacent to the wall the wood oven is built into. Tossing up whether to do stainless steel cupboards or proper joinery made from compact laminate and stone bench. Bbq can be either built in or slide in as we are still in planning stages. We have water provisions to the left so we can put a sink in and are hoping to incorporate bar fridges into it as well. Also have provisions for a rangehood.

We do a lot of entertaining with the wood oven (up to 40 people but generally around the 10-15 mark) and would like to be able to mix it up with the option of a bbq. Normally bbq for ourselves 1-2 week, which would go up if we had bbq that was better because we end up opting for charcoal for the flavor but it’s too time consuming mid week.

Obviously looks are important for the kitchen but not wanting to get a dodgy bbq either but unfortunately price is still important. It’s the fine balancing act!

What do we need to keep an eye out for in gas bbq’s? As in stainless, cast iron, burners etc?

I would still have a look at a nice ceramic one as well....
Depending on what size you get the taste of a charcoal BBQ is hard to beat.. Midweek cook so what... with a chimey starting a cook is in under 15 minute (in summer)...
Kamado Joe, Big Green egg, Kamado Cooker, Acorn and of course my fav Komodo Kamado... Great versatile cookers imo

Happy BBQ-ing, Paul

What should we be looking for?
How close is your outdoor kitchen area to your house and outdoor dining area?

Smoky style BBQ options in close proximity to either will soon lose there appeal.

What do you want to cook? What style of cooking do you like?

The outdoor dining area is attached to the kitchen of the house so flows through a door. Bbq/outdoor kitchen is part of the same area as the dining. We’ll definitely have a range hood otherwise we get smoked out by the normal gas bbq.

Cook all types of things, ranging from normal bbq fare like chops, chicken, steaks, tbones etc as well as roasts and vegetables.

Mate, any BBQ is going to give you fumes, smoke and problems.

If you go a 'smoker' option, way more so...

Even an old school Weber kettle with charcoal is a bigger problem than a standard gas BBQ.

Add a smoker box to any bbq, Weber or standard bbq, and well, yeah, close that door!

Hang on, aren't the likes of Weber Q and the genius, Ziggy ones etc. all fuelled by gas? ... Or, have I missed something?
