What starter cubes do you use?

Post by cs_rlewis »

I use the jiffy brand from Woolworths, I've also use the redheads cubes. I found these only last 10 or so minutes.
Can anyone recommend anything better?

Cheers

They don't leave a chemical smell in your food.

Get yourself a charcoal chimney for $10. Get the charcoal burning quick.

The weed burner is lots of fun. Good for starting the fire from a distance.

The looftlighter was good until it broke. The couple I had only lasted a year. Now I use a hot air paint stripper.

Paper towel soaked in vegetable oil scruntched into balls make good firelighters.

Cotton wool balls in Vaseline work well too.
My Looftlighter is going strong at about 4/5 years
I melted the tip of one ,drunk I think
Grabbed a few the first time Bunnings was dumping them

My looftlighter worked ok the last time I used it.....if I can remember where I put it

I think it's tucked away in one of those plastic container boxes after a few house moves.

They are great with lump charcoal or wood but not so great with heatbeads as they are made from coal.

I just use the redhead lighter cubes....granted they have an accelerant but by the time the briquettes are properly ashed over and ready to use, there's absolutely no scent of the cubes at all and no they don't get on the briquettes....been using them for many years now and never had tainted food....ever!!

I once tried those cardboard looking cubes but they kept on going out all the time....chucked the buggers after a few times.

I've tried newspaper crunched under the charcoal chimney....too much ash and unburnt paper flying around...that could get dangerous if it lands in the wrong place...did it once...never again.

I always thought butchers paper is just newsprint before it has been printed on.
