keeping the BBQ forum going
Re: keeping the BBQ forum going
This is on a laptop or desk top computer, I have no idea if it works on other platforms....
http://www.imagebam.com/basic-upload
Must chose "Family safe" in the "type selection" and up to you if you want to have a gallery. Once you find your pic's hit up load and once done click on the "BB" box and it will highlight and cut n paste to forum. One of the quickest I have found.
Cheers L

Re: keeping the BBQ forum going
Just to clarify a point I made in relation to 'advertising' on this forum, there is the overt and the covert.
The banner ads, love em or hate em, are a way for the forum to be paid for without slugging members a fee for use. These are overt and a part of commercial life in the computer age. Forums cost money to run and that money has to come from somewhere.
The advertising I was referring to before was 'stealth advertising', where a member would post about how great a certain product is, mostly a product that their mate was selling, and the whole thread would become a 'conversation' about how great this product was. As the forum was so popular and attracted so many hits via search engines, this 'product' was in effect getting free advertising via the forum without having to pay for the privilege. This is the covert advertising that a lot members were peeved about.
I'm not personally opposed to having vnedors/sponsonrs on the forum, as long as they're up front about where their interests are when they make a post. Some of the most helpful and unbiased posts that I've read here have come from vendors.
I will disagree with having a committee for making decisions about the direction of the forum and administering it. A camel was originally a horse that was designed by a committee .
The forum needs a cool head (or multiple heads) who can wield the stick when required to keep order without having to put each and every decision through a committee. Although as I alluded to previously, a good forum with good people shouldn't need much in the way of moderation. We the members should be moderating ourselves.
Again, my thoughts only, feel free to disagree.

Re: keeping the BBQ forum going
Yeah see your point Lovey but stealth Marketing can also be done by the vendor himself disguising a topic to talk about his product where the topic nature is only secondary. However I'm not about to bash Vendors, they have to get their message out to the market in which they want to target, we've been down that path and unfortunately for this forum, it was torn apart in the process.
There are a lot of vendors around today on the Net, on Facebook which they seem to get more bang for their buck, it's not hard for any forum member these days to source product from Australian vendors, they can join other forums that allow this sort of thing......but now that we've done all this, other forums that have branched away from this forum have learnt by the lessons and mistakes that we made here and so they have peace and harmony in their own forum world....that's good and the best part is that many of the original members from here have joined the forum that best suits their interests and so between Micks's forum, Beaver's Forum and now UG's forum, they're all doing something a bit different which allows us to get back to basics and not having to stress anymore.
Our newer members here are wanting their own little BBQ community here, the committee thing was only a suggestion but yeah we probably don't need it...was just throwing it out there.
I also don't want to be the one waving the stick around anymore...I hope I never have to get it out anymore....I think that we'll leave it up to self moderation and allow other members to pull up anyone who gets a bi out of hand...I'll only step in if any trouble escalates.
Anyway, I'm only one person, I myself cannot make a forum, it must be members who want their own community can make this forum work....I'm here as part of this community....I can't change anything that's happened in the past except learn from it....move forward....onwards and upwards
Cheers

If you don't have outside vendor pressure, You don't need a lot of rules. When I first went AWOL I drew up pages of rules.
However I gave the three other admin ultimate power to vote me down or even kick me off the forum if they so wish.
I meant it to be that way so someone could take over if I go nuts or die.
They looked at my rules and rejected them. They showed me that "culture" is more important than rules.
And let me tell you its been like a ton lifted off my back.
People read first before they join and those that stick around get the gist of the way it is.
Here are my forums rules, Copy and pasted.
"Rules
Its simple
Family rules Apply, We are Ladies and Gentleman Here. That's It
Oh, We do not allow selling or product placement on this forum from vendors, However Members can show and tell their toys and give reviews or experiences.
Its very obvious to the admin team who are simply selling so members can feel free to place pics or info about their equipment. That is the idea, Us back yard cooks talking about our recipes and equipment at ground level."
This forum has always been the teaching forum at the first point of call. Of course all the other forums offer the same service but when you read each, They all (including mine) seem to have a different slant of what is more important. Be it the Food, Equipment, comps, loose language or even sway on very general off topic interest talk like cars, bikes and boats.
All of that is simply the culture of the club.
My point is, I agree with lovey in that you do need someone with a direction sitting in the hot seat. Even better if with good mates sharing the direction.
If your moderator is only dealing with bots and crazy people, Your winning
PS, Crazy people can be fun
PPS, Listen to Mainey Davo. You are an excellent Barbecue master

Re: keeping the BBQ forum going
Thanks for the nice post Mick, I appreciate that and to Mainey, I appreciate your comments too...thankyou, I'll certainly try my best....only a couple of weeks ago I really wanted to forget this forum, it was no use I thought, nobody is interested anymore....but then it was guys like Mainey, Pesto3 and Lockyer, the new guys wanting to get this going and bring it up from the abyss that made me think, I wonder if this forum can start again, I wonder if it can be saved and this is the reason I asked this question to whoever remained here about Keeping the forum going and the response has been very uplifting from our newest members mentioned below to some of our older members who were once an integral part of this forum wanting to help out and getting this forum back on it's legs and for that Guys, I want to say thankyou. You have all given me new motivation.Smokey wrote:If you don't have outside vendor pressure, You don't need a lot of rules. When I first went AWOL I drew up pages of rules.

I still think there are rules we all need to live by and in the past, it showed that most people who came here didn't even read them and at times we had to enforce them....in fact I was pretty laid back in the early part, it was Capt> Cook who was the stick waiver originally....but yeah rules are there as a guide, on forums like this they don't need to be hard and fast. It should be the same if a bunch of blokes are sitting down together talking BBQ over a few coldies.....there's really no rules except don't be a dick!!

Once I get Paulr (owner) motivated too (the hardest part of the job) I will get him to update this forum and find ways to make it better. Theres been renewed spamming the last 2 weeks in the registration sector and I'm not able to get into that area to fix it, I alerted Paul (via FB) and he said he changed the questions but I think the spam bots have that answer already...still getting it but not as much....but we've made a start.
So, I'm about to start my weekend at work and won't get a day off till next Saturday but i'll be around during morning breaks and any free time I might get, so in the meantime, get your mates over here, talk BBQ in amongst yourselves and we'll catch up soon. Cheers Davo

Something happened a while ago that made it possible to post pics from Tapatalk. But now for some reason I can't log on through Tapatalk. Which is a pain the the bum. I do all my networking from my phone and that app is easy to use.
Re: keeping the BBQ forum going
There have been a lot of good suggestions but for me, if people are not posting photos of there cooks then this isn't a BBQ forum in my eyes.

Re: keeping the BBQ forum going
What an unfortunate thread to find when i've only just joined.
For what its worth, i will say, this has been the longest wait from signing up to being activated i've ever come across from any forum, ever!
In fact, id completely forgotten why i wanted to join and what my question was.
Was about to sign up elsewhere when an email arrived.
That aside, i feel for the Admin and Owner.
I'm a part of another Australian forum that is about to turn 30 next year
It has gone through many reincarnations, many people left and started their own forums, only for them to either die off or be sold off.
The server died years ago and everything was lost, back ups included.
Forums are hard work and time consuming those running them.
Glad i'm not part on the infighting, i've seen it too many time in other places.
Hope the places stays open, i've spend years reading the posts as an outsider.

Hi Salty, don't be disheartened by what you've read, yes the Forum did have some major issues but most if not all are now gone, and so have many of the original members following the forums to which mostly meets their interests better, however, with quite a few new guys like yourself coming here, we may be able to get it back on track...but it takes members to do all that...not just moderators.
It won't happen overnight, I've got to get the owner to do some serious updating with the software for this forum, then we can look into re-installing tapatalk and hopefully a better way to post pics.
So please bare with us, we are a friendly group here wanting to help each other.

Re: keeping the BBQ forum going
Hey Guys,
I have only just joined the forum (actually signed up in July but nobody wants to hear stories about rusty old Kmart 4 burners..). Anyway, I had been browsing the net on & off for answers to my bbq'ing questions and a lot of the time I was directed here. Hence, why I thought I should join.
This really is a great resource and it would be a shame if it didn't continue.
Its nice to be able to read back over years of conversations on a forum - there is so much you can learn. As for Facebook, F#ck that.
Keep it up guys, I look forward to learning much more from the Aussie BBQ Forum.
Cheers

Re: keeping the BBQ forum going
Thanks Toastmaster,
First of all...welcome to the forum
That's the kind of encouragement I like to hear and you're right, over the past 8 years, lots of posts, learning and BBQing from members present and past and a wealth of info.
As it stands, we've had over 130,000 posts, in 12,400 topics by over 5,000 members....
So it's an opportunity for it now to regrow and hope you'll be a part of it.
By the way guys....Spoke to Paulr (forum Owner) tonight about the forum and he will look into doing the upgrade possibly over the coming weekend.
If the forum is down for a little while, then you'll know the updating is in progress....hopefully then we can get apps like Tapatalk working, and we'll be working on trying to find a better way to post pictures.
We'll slowly get this thang happening.
Cheers
