Hi guys and gals,
I love BBQing been a part of life since a small boy. I've had a crack at most types of bbq and the old weber kettle really is hard to beat for the cost and what it can do. I don't know what I'd do without my bunnings mini spit either to be honest, best $75 bucks I ever spent!!
finally out grew what I had, so started looking at upgrading and i must admit was a little disappointed of what you got for your money, so thought I'd have a crack at building my own smoker/ oven... this is what I created, not pretty, but the food it producing is great!!!!

Re: Vertical smoker build
Wow...that smoker looks as wild as the machine behind it....lots of space for tucker and good heat retention although being up in the NT......don't think you need much retention.
All it needs now is a good paint job...probably by using an engine block paint....now which colour...black or red...either would look awesome!!
Cheers

Thanks guys,
Ive had that old girls since i was 18, just a refresh and tidy up rather than a full resto, one day maybe...
As for the cooker, heat retention not a big issue up here, plus the steel is 3/16" and the straps seal it better than I thought. It's an old air comp. cylinder the hallmark for the first pressure test is still visible 9/83 so it's a year older than me!!!!
As for paint, I thought I'd do a few cooks and make sure it worked before I went ahead and painted it and it's taken on this lovely dark patina, I'm kinda liking it as is. I've rubbed a bit of veg oil on the outside to seal it a bit. Was thinking I could Matt clear coating?? Are there any health issues having the outside rustyish? I've eating off those camping bbq plates before?

Re: Vertical smoker build
Hey
just saw post
nice job
coming from a wine making background and dealing with presses
we advise a particular paint for the job becuase of the food contact
as for outside your smoker i would say check with the paint guys in terms
of what the heat might do to the paint and what compounds
might be given off from the heat on the piant
love the smoker and i can see the resemblance to bender from futurama
Ha Ha

Outstanding. Don't paint it, the patina is a highlight. I've got a 50l keg that I've been eyeing as a potential vertical. I think this has tipped the scale, where's my angle grinder.
Re: Vertical smoker build
Thanks guys.
Old Bender has taken on a really rich dark patina and ill be keeping it that way. Ive just been rubbing it down with rice bran oil evey now and again.
Ive got the temps and fuel consumption both stable and spot on now. I can get it to temp quite quick and hold for 10+ hours.
Ive drilled a couple small holes in the back and installed a 6 probe bluetooth inkbird gauge, money very well spent (but chews batteries)
Ill try post some pics of a bit of tucker i did Bathurst weekend.

Re: Vertical smoker build
Hi there,
I finally got hold of a couple of old air receivers, I've turned one into a grill and just started work on the 2nd as a vertical smoker/oven. I'm going to make it able to use gas or wood as per this monster on a US forumhttps://www.smokingmeatforums.com/threa ... ld.112017/:
AussieNT, when you said you got 10 hours out of Bender, that was just on wood? If so, can you describe you technique for maintaining the temp? Also what's Bender's diameter? I've also attached a pic of the grill made from the receiver.
