Charcoal basket

Post by Harryg » Sun Dec 13, 2015 11:27 am

Hey people i'm in the middle of making a uds smoker and realized while I was reading up on the subject that you can't use galvanised mesh as a basket. Where would you get something stainless steel for this in Melbourne?

As it may only be galvanized coating, throw it in a fire and it'll burn the gal coating off.

Really? Looks like it would be easier to do it that way. Stainless mesh is sooooo expensive and sorta hard to get

Actually I've just done a bit of googling about it. Would be best if you read in to it yourself. Some say you can burn it off. Others say mix water and some sort of acid and that'll get rid of it. Either way, the fumes from it are nasty, so read up about it for yourself first. Just Google something like "remove galvanized coating ".

When I made my basket for the Hark Tri Fire
5mm angle and 5 mm rods just spot wielded to the angle on the side
cost 25 bucks and a six pack to borrow a mates wielder

I made mine the same as this (hope this link is ok to post ? )

There are a few things I did different.
My grill grates did not need cutting.
I picked up some expanded metal from salvage yard.
As my smokey joe is the silver model I added 2 3/4 inch ball valves to the sides to help with air flow.
Also picked up a $1.50 stainless steel bowl from cheap as chips to go under the charcoal bucket to stop bottom vent from blocking up.
