What's the purpose of the two holes in the plate on the inside of the firebox door?

Just to let hot air flow in the gap and keep a hot air buffer for more stable temps.

Also, the frame stops the extreme heat warping the firebox lid and if you put a gauge in the firebox, the buffer stops the gauge from getting cooked.

Yeah I've seen a couple of mobs in the us put gauges in the fire box before do you think it's need at all or just a bit of a wank factor? I don't really seen the point of fire box temps plus I'd say you'd go through a few gauges haha

If you know your smoker, you'll know that a firebox temp of XX means a even pit temp of YY, and a firebox temp of XXA gives a pit temp that is YY on the chimney end and ZZ at the firebox end. A temp gauge in the firebox is not essential, but can be useful. You can also see if your fire is increasing or decreasing, this takes longer to be noticed in the cooking barrel.
