New to BBQ, tips and suggestions on what to buy

Post by HannibalK1ng »

Hi Everyone,

Been looking for a while now to start smoking/bbq some meat.

Looking for something that will use charcoal and wood chips.

I will link the few ive been looking at, any suggestions would be great.
The most obvious is the 2 diffrent stlyes of smoker, not sure which is better.
I will only get the chargriller delaux if i can get it with the side box as well, but it looks fairly cheap and dont really want to have to modify it.
anyone used the texas smoker for bbqs galore?

Look at Kamados
Hark Tri Fire (way better than the BBQs Galore/Chargriller offset)
ProQ
Wood pellet Grills

Cheers

thanks for the reply guys.

Dont really want to spend $600 plus for the hark even though it looks great.

been reading more about the bunning char griller looks good, and also the ProQ.....

i think it would be out of these 2 at the moment.

Any suggestions why one is better than the other?

Don't buy cheap quality. It's false economy in the end.

With the Hark it will be close to $700

For a year starting off surely the char griller will do?

ProQ definitely if your considering a chargriller.
You will be able to achieve better results with ease of use with the proQ.
The chargriller will take a lot more effort etc.

There two totally different smokers, in terms of use.
Chat to Chris @ Urbangriller, he'll be able to tell you more, and let you know what he think would be best. (I think he sells them both)

I started with a Chargriller from Bunnings....and they are a very cheap BBQ....however it did allow me time to learn and decide what to purchase once i had worked out what type of smoking etc i wanted to do.
Just be ware its some what addictive.
As i now have
2 Webbers
2 Offsets
1 kamado
1 Gaaaer for sausages only.

And am currently looking at another larger offset.

So it comes down to what the $$$ allow and what your happy with.

I have the HARK and its a great little offset smoker for that $700 dollar mark.

Cheers,

Andrew.

One simple difference is the ProQ you can set and walk away, it will stay rock solid on temp for hours, it can be done, but it is hard to get an offset to do that, normally you'll be stoking the fire every hour or so.

I have cooked on the WSM and what would be the American version of the Texas Smoker. This maybe a naïve assumption, but I am thinking the Pro Q will perform much like the WSM? The Chargriller Deluxe w/offset is also going to perform like the Chargriller. They will work well, but will require a LOT of tending without modifications. And other then the 2nd shelf in the WSM & Pro Q, would you not have just as much space in a Webber Kettle, for about 1/3 the cost?

With a little learning curve, you can make the Kettle perform just as well as the WSM & Pro Q and still have the Charcoal & wood Chip fuel!

I have offset, cabinet, and UDS.
If you make BBQ for your self and your family, UDS is best.

If your going to go the UDS route you might look at this

from all accounts it's a great kit
