Re: Weber One Touch Gold vs Akorn Kamado review
Hi 12x7 Yes the Dragon was indeed good value. Likewise I imported the Performer from the US back when you could at half the price they go for in Oz... it has given me sterling service and still looks like new, apart from a small chip off the outer porcelain on the bowl caused by pouring hot charcoal...

Re: Weber One Touch Gold vs Akorn Kamado review
Nice review! I have very similar cookers - a Weber Performer and a Dragon Kamado (very similar to an Akorn but perhaps no longer available?). The only points I would add are: - The Weber kettle doesn't have a stainless steel grill in any spec - it is nickel plated steel (I prefer the cast iron grill...
Re: SMOKE
If you're using a kettle, I find the best flavour results from either wrapping the wood in foil before placing on the coals or just placing the wood on the food grate directly above the coals if you have a reasonably large fire. I agree that placing wood directly on the coals results in too much whi...

Re: Akorn kamado BBQ advice
That link says that ceramic is a good electrical insulator (completely unrelated to thermal properties) and that ceramic fibre is a good thermal insulator, which is not used in ceramic kamados (but probably is in steel ones!). Dense ceramic, by itself, is not a good insulator - low density and tiny ...

Re: Akorn kamado BBQ advice
Ceramic is a good insulator, it's just a slightly different way of holding the heat, this is evidenced by the low fuel usage. I'm not going to argue on Which is better they both can turn out mighty fine food. I agree they both put out excellent food but ceramic is not a good insulator - it is a con...

Re: Akorn kamado BBQ advice
Costco sells ceramic kamado grill, my mate told me its better then Akorn, he preferred ceramic one Did he say why? Personally I prefer a kamado that is insulated, which Akorns / Dragons are and ceramics aren't, unless you can stump up for a Komodo Kamado which requires a substantial amount of coin...

Re: Davy Crockett vs Holy Grail
Yep, as one of the participants in this test who voted for Optimus, I reckon the difference is that one was seared in the process and the other wasn't. Giving them both a searing would have been more of a fair contest - I'm looking forward to round 2! :D Having said that though - I doubt any BBQ cou...

Re: Nothing exciting; cleaning a Weber
The fact that you don't need to clean a Weber is fantastic, isn't it? I was very grateful for it last week when I did sausages in mine. I couldn't be bothered using and cleaning my Cobb Cooker, which also meant that using an electric frying pan was right out. I just pulled the Weber out of the gara...

Re: Akorn and Dragon General Discussion
I'm sure my bottom vent doesn't seal perfectly but it's not really a problem - the fire dies fine and I am always amazed at how little charcoal it uses. But I removed the washer that the instructions said to put between the two halves of the daisy wheel top vent. That means you get a perfectly seale...

Re: Nothing exciting; cleaning a Weber
There's nothing wrong with cleaning a BBQ and it's a subject worth talking about! It's just that one of the many advantages of a charcoal BBQ for me is that it doesn't really need cleaning (other than to make it look nice of course, which is fine - whatever floats your boat!). I've cooked regularly ...

Nice work! Although personally I prefer drinking the single malt rather than injecting it!

Re: Akorn and Dragon General Discussion
I'm not game to go anywhere near the temps you have clearly got to here but I just wanted to add my confirmation that the Dragon has indeed cooked our best chooks by far. Golden brown skin, with just the very tips of the wings a bit burnt. And the pizzas start to bubble and pop as soon as they hit t...

Re: Red heads natural wood charcoal - ok for kamado?
In my opinion they work better than lump - longer lasting, more stable and predictable - less prone to overshooting so rapidly as they are a little more forgiving on the vent positioning - and minimal ash etc. Easy to add whatever smoke profile you want with your added wood as the Redheads have virt...

Re: Asking the pellet heads
That info has been in a few pellet discussions in here, in fact that's how I found out about them. Yep - googling around I see I was actually contributing to some of those threads years ago. Clean forgot about it - probably because I assumed it was an east coast discussion... or I'm just getting ol...
