Glad you got it all sorted out. I would have climbed a clock tower and gone fully nuts. But, if they sent you a new controller with latest firmware, why did you "update" it when you got it? I don't get that bit.

Interesting. Grinding wouldn't matter, would it? A 1 kg brick weighs 1kg whether in a block or dust.
(And however , I'd go by weight)

Having issues with heat.

I just fired up about three quarters of a chimney, with a mix of genuine heat beads and some much lower quality lokki ones, in to my knock-off home made vortex and temp is about 400f to 400f at the top vent. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08/16/e0c62533c24668bbe46406499fe2b1f4.jpg http://images.t...

If I use a chimney full of lit beads, then roughly half in each side, the temp gage I have sitting/sticking out of the top vent sits on about 400f

You can jam the firebox lid open with a stick. It'll let some of the heat out, but eventually the stick will smoke/burn.
How many beads are you putting in that are alight? Possible for pics?

Nothing wrong with your post at all. However, your dirty kettle is about as clean as mine will ever get.

I believe it's sand that is embedded in the timber.

Yes, it makes it a lot easier. As to which one, my old Weber one held a few more than the heatbeads one, but I now have 2 heatbeads types, as I got them on super special for $10 or something. So basically the same, so get whichever one is cheaper/easier to get.

Chimney always full open. Closing it chokes off the air/heat flow.

Narmnaleg, I think it's you and me with our heat guns vs everyone else.
However, at least this new type has a switch that locks in.
