Re: Home Brew

You'll also find that the people who work in home brew supply shops love to talk, dispense advice and help newbies. Try to pick a time where they are unlikely to be busy (i.e. not Saturday morning) and have a good chat. If you happen to be in Sydney on the lower north shore, then Dave's Homebrew in ...

Re: Looftlighter back in bunnings

Pretty good for giving tortillas that perfect shade of colour too. Charcoal from the bottom, Looftlighter from the top. Done in a few seconds.

Re: Looftlighter back in bunnings

At $2.50, I would stockpile 16 of them too ;-)

Re: Looftlighter back in bunnings

My Looftlighter packed it in after a few years. I bought a couple of replacements, but curiosity got the better of me and I took the faulty one apart. The symptoms were that the heating element would get hot, but the fan won't spin. It turns out that my dead Looftlighter is repairable. The circuitry...

Re: Coffee Roasting

I'm no stranger to roasting my own beans using a pop corn maker. I've also seen it done using a skillet over a gas flame burner. I was more interested in finding out if anyone has actually experimented in doing it in a Kamado and how it turned out.

Re: Fire Lighters

As luck would have it, my Looftlighter died after a few years of regular use. Bunnings are not going to import them again, but now that the paperwork has been sorted they are selling the remaining stock without modification. Clearance price appears to be $29, but stock is very limited. I had the peo...

Re: Coffee Roasting

Anyone tried roasting coffee beans in a Kamado style cooker? If it does work, what's the suggested process?

Re: Saving Charcoal

I've been using an old conical lamp shade and doing the shaking straight over the compost bin. This stuff is best done on a still day. The last thing you want is a big gust of wind blowing all that dust onto your washing or in your face.

Re: Fire Lighters

None of them had any issues on the technical side as far as I know. It was purely a sticker job - jumping through the right hoops and paying the right people to get a piece of paper that says it's all good. To the best of my knowledge, the design and construction has not changed.

Re: Looftlighter back in bunnings

Charcoal is quick - 30 seconds to get it started, 60 seconds to have it flaming all over the place. Two minutes and you have an inferno.

Heatbeads (if you are willing to cook your food on that filth) are slower. Maybe 60 seconds to get them started and around two minutes to get them really going.

Re: Fire Lighters

The new Officeworks courier service might end up being a cost effective alternative for shipping these around the country. Looks like it should be about $11-$12.

Re: Kogan Smoker

Not a great smoker and not a good price. I paid less than that from a hardware store in Gloucester a few years ago.

You would be better off with an Aldi gas smoker next time they have them. It's not that much more expensive (mine was $139) and a much better experience if you want to smoke stuff.

Re: Aldi Gas Smoker - Flare up

You still had the drip pan above the woodbox, right? Because otherwise you could get fat dripping down and igniting.
