Re: Charcoal and heat beads

Cheers.
I'll keep it in mind for when I start running low, at the going consumption I likely have enough to last me 6-12 months out in the garage  Raided the Masters sale the other weekend when they had a 10% off employee "special" .

Re: Charcoal and heat beads

Just a side question here. Would Emberpak be worth a visit for picking some charcoal? Work just down the road so would be a welcome local spot for coal.

Re: Thrown in the deep end.

Cheers Lamb is a must, birthday boy (stepson) is a lamb nutter and wouldn't have it any other way. And he'd likely disown me if there wasn't a bone to gnaw clean so cooking it to pulling is mostly out too. Would do it in the roti but I'm not a 100% sure how the cheapo gasman kit would handle a decen...

Thrown in the deep end.

Wife's just gone and kicked me into the deep end of the pool with inviting the family over for a birthday bbq next week and I've yet to get a hang of the new Acorn. Originally it was just to be 4 people, birthday boy a lamb lover, so figured a simple cook with a chook and small lamb roast on the rot...

Re: Akorn and Dragon General Discussion

Just gave mine a first seasoning run, amazed at how well you can control the temperature. Loaded it up with a mix of Diggers (scrap from the bottom of the bag) and some Heatbeads, one firelighter on the top of the pile quite quickly had me at a stable 200C. For a giggle cranked the vents open and ha...

Re: Akorn and Dragon General Discussion

Well now...that little post just "cost" me $389 and a wife rolling her eyes at me! Been keeping my eyes on them ever since I saw them at my local Bunnings a month or so ago but wasn't willing to fork out the full $500, but at $389 and a tax return burning a hole in my pocket it was j...

Re: Gourmet Brined Chicken

Tried it for the first time tonight as a premiere use of my rotisseries and have to agree, great recipe! Tossed in a small tray of potatoe wedges underneath the chook to soak up some of the juices lost while cooking and the wife used the remaining juices to make a gravy. Excuse the POS Iphone shots ...

Re: Jack of all trades

Likely more talent than it's owner! Near disaster narrowly averted during it's first use...mental note: when using a segmented spit make bloody sure to tighten the pieces up firmly! Took a peek in after cooking for around an hour and the pieces had nearly un-threaded themselves  Que mad scram...

Jack of all trades

And likely master of none! Been itching to try out a rotisserie but since they for some reason don't sell one for the Bunnings Chargriller here downunder I instead resorted to one of the cheapo Gasmate 240V kits. Fit surprisingly well with a minimum of fuss, motor side just needed 2 holes drilled an...

Re: Temp & smoke management help

Think I'm starting to get to the bottom, or atleast to some form of an idea, of the temp issue. Been running the smoker stupidly using the temp dial it shipped with and only last week caved in and got a digital probe for a lamb roast. Slow cooked deboned lamb roast that came up to internal temp lots...

Re: BBQ Galore - Dragon Kamado is back!

Might add, though I might be out of the loop here, that the Acorns seem to be back at Bunnings aswell, had a poke through my local store today and stumbled across a pallet of 4 having just been delivered. Along with a whole stack of other Chargriller pieces too I might add, had about 10 of the barrr...

Re: Heat attack roast potatoes

Think I have a different idea of heart attack potatoes in the shape of raw panfried potato slices. All you need is 4 odd mm think potato slices, a silly hot pan, more butter than you think was ever possible to cook just some spuds and a generous helping of salt. Trick is to cook them just long enoug...

Re: Temp & smoke management help

"Unfortunately" I'm a Sydneysider with all that brings  Next cook I'll try the suggestions here and also thinking about adding some thermal mass to the cooking chamber. Got an old stack of lava rocks that I'm thinking of placing on the in-barrel charcoal grate, theory in my head would...

Re: Temp & smoke management help

There's likely my issue then as I had the bottom vent wide open and the top around half way closed. Figured it would create more draw through the setup than the other way around. Tested it a few times using a lighter at the bottom vent and seemed like I had a decent amount of air going in. Next time...

Temp & smoke management help

Alrighty, brand new at this game having just added the sidefire/tabletop grill bit to my CharGriller less than a week ago. With family coming over for a dinner the day after my purchase it was a somewhat nervous pit-noob that fired the thing up last Saturday for some ribs and chicken bits. Took me l...
