Can Lump Charcoal Be Too Big?
We all hate opening a bag of charcoal to find crumbs and dust, but I recently bought a bag of Jumbuck charcoal which has some absolute whoppers inside. About 50% of the pieces are as long as the bag is wide, so about 30cm long with diameters up to 10cm. At first I was concerned that such large piece...

Re: Charcoal suppliers
I see Heatbeads now have their own brand of lump charcoal (or maybe they have for a while and I just haven't noticed). $39 for 20kg at Bunnings, but I tried three different stores with no luck. Their briquettes are generally highly rated on here, so hopefully their lump will be of similar quality. T...

Re: Akorn and Dragon General Discussion
Fired up my Dragon this morning, got it sitting nicely at around 110c and then chucked on a couple small chunks of hickory, put in a pizza stone for heat deflector, drip pan, and my pork and closed it all up. Went back about 15 mins later, nice stream of smoke coming out, but the temperature gauge ...

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j396/R_A_B_I_D/Pulled%20Pork_zpscyz8wa7t.jpg My first attempt at low and slow on the dragon went well. Eight hour pork shoulder over robot turds and hickory chunks. Bottom vent about 5mm open, top vent set to just the notches, held a fairly steady 120C. Hand on m...

Re: Akorn and Dragon General Discussion
Hi guys, Very new to BBQ and looking to get a dragon with the current sale at Barbecues Galore. One question - I'm interested in cold smoking salmon and/or trout....can one do it in the dragon? If so, any recommendations for method/recipes? Thanks! I used mine for for cold smoking last week using a...

.....Um Gauge Marker....half moon and mark 1 from above?.......what are you trying to say? Chris I think he means from the above post (Mine. Actually my first on the forum, which is a little scary), he has used the same vent positions, being the little semi-circular notch on the top vent (which I c...

Re: Akorn and Dragon General Discussion
I cooked a beer can chicken this afternoon for an idiot-proof first meal from the Dragon. Fantastic! The moisture retention was amazing. Despite a few hiccups along the way, I'm really happy with my new friend.

Re: Akorn and Dragon General Discussion
Goo oozed out of your temperature probe? What probe is that? Also, high end probes are rated to 700F (only)....I don't have to tell you, I'm sure you've worked it out....don't leave a probe in after 500F is a good rule. And the "Musty" smell....likely the oil and the mangrove charcoal com...

Re: Akorn and Dragon General Discussion
Well that was rather more exciting than I had hoped............... Sit back, boys and girls, for a cautionary tale about playing with new toys. I had a day off today and put it to good use by picking up and assembling my Dragon. Took a couple of hours, but it all went smoothly. So far, so good. Wash...

Re: G'day from Rob in Perth
.......How are you set for charcoal? I picked up a bag of lump from Masters for no better reason than I was there and it looked like the stuff on youtube.......... I've since read that it's a bit light-weight, but it will get me through the seasoning and experimentation phase. I got the call...

G'day from Rob in Perth
Greetings Ladies and Gents. I think you could call me another of Chris' disciples as my eyes were opened after doing one of his courses. I've been making do with gas since then, but the current Dragon Kamado sale seemed like the perfect opportunity to jump into the world of charcoal. I'm looking for...
