I am kinda a gadget freak and one of my frequently used gadgets is my Thermapen from a company called ThermoWorks. It can measure temperatures in under 4 seconds which is a big plus if you need to quickly determine whether a piece of food is ready (chicken especially).
The thermometer has a needle tip probe that allows it to be easily inserted into different types of meat. It can measure temps between -50C and 300C / -58F – 572F. I ordered one that measure in Fahrenheit as most of my cookbooks have recipes listed in Fahrenheit and most internet sites are American hence measure in F as well (basically I’m too lazy to keep converting between Fahrenheit and Celsius.
Be careful about thermometers that advertise “reading” a temperature within a few seonds as what hey usually mean is the can change the temperature withinthat period but to actually measure the correct tempreature can take 30-40 seconds which is an eternity when you’re measuring over a hot BBQ.
I use this gadget for most of my cooks (even steaks) as it gives an objective measurement of where your meat is at. Yes I know you can tell how cooked your meat is by prodding and puching it however I feel a lot more comfortable measuring the exact temperature and knowing what the internal temp is (I especially want to be sure with a BBQ-ed chook).
This is the site where you can order this gadget (no unfortunately I do not get commission and yes they ship to Oz!). http://www.thermoworks.com/products/thermapen/tpen_home.html
