Hi All

Gday guys,

I'm 28 from Melbourne and very much into bbqing meat! I bought my first bbq about 5 years ago (cough... a downunder 4 burner with roasting hood and rotisserie), which while basic and has many flaws, has served me well and is still running to this day. I've always been a fan of what weber kettles can do, so I few weeks ago I purchased a Smokey Joe. I currently live alone and am a little tight financially, so I figured this would be a good way to do some charcoal grilling while on a budget. I'm interested in getting a one touch gold plus, or a performer in the near future (I'm absolutely in love with the performer), which would largely phase out my gas bbq. Since owning the downunder, I've had a few months off grilling here or there, but the rest of the time love to grill 3-4 times a week :) Great to find an Aussie community to read and talk about bbqing!

Hi Enerjex and welcome.

So you've been bitten by the charcoal bug, great now we just need to get you into some gear.
What part of Melbourne are you from, I am from the Hoppers Crossing area.
Keep an eye on ebay, there isn't anything of interest there at the moment,
I generally do gas during the week and charcoal or wood pellets on the weekend but all that is about to change,

Cheers

Thankyou for the welcome! Sorry I took so long to come reply. I'm from Aspendale area captain, and I do like the big green eggs too, but I'm swaying in favour of the weber models. I'm hopeful of getting a performer or otg by xmas time, while the smokey joe is cooking some fantastic ribeyes, even basic foods like bbq chicken wings and small roasts, I'm looking forward to doing pork, pizza, chicken, beef and lamb roasts in a 57cm.

Hi enerjex,

If you could swing the extra money to get the Performer, I beleive you won't be sorry.

The initial pain of the investment will soon be forgotten when you begin to see it's advantages over the OTG and while they are basically the same kettle, having it in the sturdy trolley is worth every cent.

The worktable built in to the trolley is a godsend because it allows you to easily slip food on & off the grill, the storage bin is great to store your charcoal, woodchips and any other good stuff and one of the big things for me is because it's in the trolley, it sits up a lot higher which makes it a lot easier to work with and it's easier on the back. Plus it's got the gas lighter systems which means you don't have to stuff around with matches and lighter cubes although I do find that those canisters of gas are not cheap at $12.95 so I decided to go back with lighting with the cleaner compressed cardboard type lighting blocks while using my chimney, they are just as good but light a little slower than the lighter cubes but do the same job without the kero smell.

Anyway, just my 2 cents worth of opinion but the other kettles are great as well...either way...you're gunna be happy!! :)

Cheers

Cheers Davo,

If anyone has any info or contacts for getting a performer at a discounted priced please PM me. It will be a huge stretch for me to get the performer, so every cent counts!
