Smoked habaneros

G'day all,
a mate at work has a habanero bush and he gave me a bag full. I threw half of them into the freezer in a ziploc bag and I had a go at smoking the other half of them.
I fired up the kamado and got it to 220-230F , I dropped in a foil pouch of smoking chips and put the habs in.

After leaving them in a bowl for a little while to cool, they were easy to shatter with my fingers and the smell, unbelievable. I've heard people talking about the 'fruitiness' of the habanero, but all I could taste was burning. After smoking them, the fruit smell is very pronounced.
I've got a spice grinder on order and I'll grind them into powder when it arrives. I'll report back when I've tried some.

Sorry to reply to my own thread :oops: .
I just ground 2 of the chllies up with the mortar and pestle and added it to my spaghetti bolognaise.

That's in a small ramekin dish.

Holy dooley, great punch but also great flavour at the same time. I haven't stopped sweating yet :shock: 2 down, about 40 to go :lol: .
I'll be definitely doing this again.

Go easy on those dried chillies, the smell is unreal and lulls you into a false sense of security and next thing you know your mouth is on fire.

Made that mistake with smoked & dried Butch T scorpions. Never again.

I ground mine by getting a $20 coffee grinder from Kmart, doesn't matter if I throw it out when I'm done that way. It was worth it for the kilo or so of twice smoked and dried Jalapenos I turned into Chipotle.

I opened the bag up for my wife to smell them and she said she thought they were dates or prunes, they were that fruity. They certainly do have a sting in the tail, and I was sweating cobs for a while after eating them :lol: .

It might be unfounded Steve but i've always felt eating hit chillis like that could produce stomach ulcers....so i've never been game. :roll:

Each to their own Davo. I used to hate anything spicy before I met my Italian friend and he introduced me to chillies and I worked on my tolerance to them over the years. Admittedly, my consumption of chillies has dropped way off since I had kids, but I'm working on other ways to incorporate them into my food. I've never had a stomach ulcer, they're caused by bacteria, but with the heat of the chillies and the beer that I drink, no bacteria could survive in my gut :lol: .

I can stand some heat but not a lot, my wife is even more tolerant to me with chilli. I remember once following an American rub recipe and put the "required amount" of Cayenne pepper in the rub which went on some pork ribsI was smoking for some friends coming over for dinner...well we all nearly needed a visit from the local fire brigade...holy S..T that was HOT :shock:

I like chilli in dishes to give it that extra kick but not to the point where it paralyses the mouth :lol:

You wouldn't like the "Spicy Chicken with Numbing" recipe I make then, especially when I cook it without my specs on and mistake Teaspoons of Chili flakes for Tablespoons. :? :?

oops, was a bit too hot even for me. Son battled through it last time but the wife told me very, very bluntly never to cook it again,

Lucky I didn't accidentally use the Butch T flakes as well. Would have melted through the plates.

Based on an interesting combination, chilli flakes for the spicy and szechuan pepper in the seasoned flour for the numbing. Those Hab's would go well in this dish Lovey.

My mum loved hot chillis someone gave her some seeds she grew it tasted it and pulled the plant out.
I love chilli as hot as possible but not habenero
