How accurate are cheap (ebay) thermometers?

Post by martyn »

I bought a second digital thermometer on ebay as a backup since they are so cheap (this one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ws/eBayISAPI ... 0305960691). Image

Now I stuck it and the very similar one I bought from dealextreme into the breast of a chook I was cooking and they gave results about 5 degrees different. Then this week I stuck them both under the Weber lid to get the grill temp while I was cooking and again they were between 3 and 10 degrees different... Has anybody done a comparison between one of these and a decent quality one from Maverick or the like, are they accurate? It is possible that my dx one is misreading since it is a bit melted from being too close to the heat for too long....

I'm also considering putting one of the analogue dial style ones( http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ws/eBayISAPI ... 0593841836) into my lid but reading http://www.amazingribs.com/BBQ_buyers_g ... guide.html he suggests this type of thermometer is "usually crap", any comments?

Martyn

I have one identical from Dealextreme also and just last night got a Maverick ET-732 from http://www.mistygully.com.au along with other spices etc so I will do some comparisons over the weekend and let you know.

Have to cook something (big and slow maybe) as it is only the second weekend with my new Royal Kamado

It should read 100C in a pot of boiling water.
Test it that way

We developed a standard G&T test for probes:

Well I did a version of the G&T test using a glass of water with a couple of ice cubes and a pot of boiling water. The dealextreme version (http://www.dealextreme.com/p/0-9-digita ... lr44-32311) read 4.2degrees in ice water, and went up to 95.1 in boiling water. It took about a minute to get there. The ebay version (linked above) read 6.2 in the same ice water, and rose to 97.6 in the boiling water. So if they should be reading 100 in boiling water than neither seems all that accurate, with the ebay one being the closer of the two :(

I was also looking for a Thermopen but couldn't find one on Ebay. Instead I purchased a CDN 450 which seems to be ok. At least it has a form of calibration. Will post a review when I get it. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/170475442830 ... 1439.l2649

A bit late reply, sorry. The cdn 450 is good. Does the GT test (or mojito in my case..) in 6 seconds and displays 98.5-99.5 in boiling water. Quality seems good too.

I've just checked mine in boiling water and got a very disappointing result !

The cheap ebay pen type registered right on 212 F and dropped to 210 after I took the water off the gas. BUT the more expensive Maverick only registered 192F at the same point. No bloody wonder I've been over doing the king rib eyes. This thing is readinr 20 degrees under !!!! I assume it's a proper Maverick, although did get it on Ebay a few years back. It says Maverick on the back but Redi Check on the label on the front. Is it a copy do you think ?

This one has Redi Check and the word 'Remote' inside a blue thunder bolt. It has 'Maverick 692300' on the back and 'Maverick Industries Inc Edison NJ' on the battery cover of the reciever unit. It hasd a sender unit with the same logo and both the sender and receiver have a display screen.

I've got an older Maverick "Remote Check" and it is poor compared with the newer ET732....don't use it anymore!

The Newer models are way better!

Ok guys here's the deal.

*EDIT* ( Mods can see what was there)

Next week sometime I'll get with the guys at ETI and see if we can work something out to where they can land and offer some in bulk to my new Q family that is ABBQA. If they are all ordered in one shipment the cost will ( I assume ) be lower.

I can not promise anything but will do my best.
